The AP has been putting out a poll since 1936. Here's a list of which SEC teams were first ranked number 1 in the AP poll:
1. Texas A&M 1939
2. Tennessee 1939
3. Texas 1941
4. Georgia 1942
5. Oklahoma 1950
6. Auburn 1957
7. LSU 1958
8. Missouri 1960
9. Ole Miss 1960
10. Alabama 1961
11. Arkansas 1965
12. Florida 1985
13. Mississippi State 2014
Even though they were the 10th SEC team to be ranked number 1, Alabama has accomplished this 140 times since then which is 35 more weeks than the second place team, tOSU with 105 number 1 rankings. I'd guess they've had some pretty good coaches since then.
Mississippi State is the most recent team to be ranked number 1 in the AP poll for the first time in their history. Prior to that it was Oregon in 2010 and Virginia in 1990.

Alabama had perfect seasons prior to the AP Poll’s existence; interestingly enough in 1945 the team went undefeated and finished 2nd. The #1 team that year was Army, who ran roughshod over an impressive slate of opponents and never left the #1 spot.
We didn’t get that good again until the Bear returned.
