People act like TAMU, LSU, and Auburn were blitzing 5+ every down. While each brought pressure a lot more than they put on tape in 2021, they also had a lot of success with simulated pressure where they showed 5+ pressures but only brought 4 (sometimes with an overload to one side).

I think Smart tried too hard to copycat pressures Alabama didn't handle well this season and played right into Saban's plan. They expected Smart to copycat and were well prepared for what they'd failed to do on tape throughout the season.

That same guy on his breakdown of Bama's offense before the SECCG said Auburn did not blitz more than five that often, but LSU blitzed six pretty often.

Andy Staples pointed out in his article that Auburn did a better job of disguising it. UGA ran things they had run all year up front and tried to fool Young in the secondary. Not a good plan.

Auburn got to Bryce by running around RT repeatedly and, at the same time, pushing a 1 legged Darian Dalcourt (C) into the pocket. Even Kirby noted that what Auburn did was kind of its own thing because of crowd noise and different personel.

As for LSU, they just swarmed us with a defense that was quite literally the opposite of what they'd done all season. We were totally unprepared and didn't adjust at all.

The only game where a team really beat us with blitzes that we had prep for was A&M. And they did it a bunch and just whipped us with them. And most of those were over center.

Bryce is clearly at his worst when the defense collapsed a pocket around him or overwhelm us immediately. For one, it's hard for any QB to beat that. For two, he's short, and a collapsing pocket tightening in on him makes it really hard for him to see. That's why the Dalcourt issue against Auburn was such a big deal. If it was just a free rusher around end, Bryce is pretty good at avoiding and moving. If it's a free rush end AND pressure up the middle, he has shown he'll throw fading backwards and it leads to sailing throws and picks (Auburn and Cincy got one this way).

(apparently he has done several film studys on them this season)

He was the UGA beat guy for SI for a while, now does film breakdowns of every game, mostly on his pay-site on Patreon. It's pretty good stuff, usually. I haven't watched this one yet, really don't feel like reliving that game.

Cool, first time I had come across him. Really enjoy when someone breaks down games like that.
