Great crowd at The Box today:

Even with the lack of competition this weekend for some teams, think it's safe to say the new baseball definitely made an impact on the games this weekend. Glad to see that the NCAA made the appropriate moves to bring some offense back into the game.

Couldn't agree more. The fact that such a big crowd came out to The Box during the Mardi Gras season speaks volumes.

That has to be some accounting quirk. You KNOW that Bama's football program brings in more than enough to fund their entire athletic department and not need any funds from the academic side. I'm pretty sure that State's football program does, too.
Most of the big name schools from the Power 5 conferences are fully capable of funding themselves with no gov't aid. It wasn't a knock to say only LSU is/was capable of being self-sufficient, but that they are. The Athletic department at LSU for some time now hasn't taken any subsidies.

Wrong. Florida's athletics are completely funded by the Gator Boosters Inc. We take no public money and we give millions to the university as well.
I didn't say other athletic departments weren't funded and supported by boosters, advertisements, and etc. Just that LSU hasn't been using subsidy support for their athletics. It was all funded in-house. Per USA...

At a time of tight budgets throughout higher education, even the nation's few financially self-sufficient major-college athletics departments are continuing to receive subsidies in the form of student fees, school or state support, a USA TODAY Sports analysis finds.
Just 23 of 228 athletics departments at NCAA Division I public schools generated enough money on their own to cover their expenses in 2012. Of that group, 16 also received some type of subsidy — and 10 of those 16 athletics departments received more subsidy money in 2012 than they did in 2011.
quote:
LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Purdue and Texas were the only schools to report no subsidy money in 2012.
USA TODAY
Just to point out from that articles figures that were reported to the NCAA, UF according to the report, used 4.4 million in total subsidy. For the record, I'm 99.99% sure that UF falls under the 23 universities mentioned that are capable of covering all their expenses. It's just that they did in fact used outside support in some form. As you can see from the revenue, UF generated plenty to function on their own. I never disputed that. Just that LSU was the only SEC member that didn't used outside support in the form of subsidy.

Great baseball weekend. Got to see some young pitchers on the LSU staff. Hopefully Godfrey will just use today as a learning experience. I'm waiting for that weekend tournament in Houston for the Minute Maid Classic. That should test this team for sure.

Fairly positive UGA is in the same boat. In fact, I know for a fact we donate a good amount back to academics and bank a ton of money. It' s a large part of the reason fans had been getting so pissy with the administration lately; we were bringing in a ton of money on our own and just sitting on it.

Vandy 2 -1 against Santa Clara was a good showing. Maybe the best of the weekend.

Thanks to everyone that was appreciative of the work, was glad to do it. Will probably try to have one each weekend, maybe not as up to date with everything going on minute by minute depending on the week but. I definitely enjoyed it, allows me to keep up with the rest of the SEC better anyway. It'll be a lot more fun once Directv finally has SECN+

Some much for Vols baseball being back. I just realized they were playing @ FIU though, what the hell Vols?
First series of the season...we will be fine. I think once the pitching staff settles in and the bats get going, things will be alright.

Lots of sweeps opening weekend. This going to be a tough season in the SEC.

The Yardcocks passed the trial by fire opening weekend, beating a ranked team in CofC to start the year.
We had some Freshman step up big with hits or HR's at key times, and the pitching was solid on Saturday for the double header. Curious to see who are mid-week pitchers are. Wil Crowe started the 1st game on Saturday and reminded everyone why he was a post-season Fr All American last season. He allowed 4 hits, 1 run and had 10 SO's in 6 innings. Fielding was also very solid, no Errors over the 3 games.
CofC had some solid pitchers of their own and kept the Gamecocks well below their team batting avg from the previous year.
