And that doesn't tell the story. Example, Ole miss:

2023: 14... four star players in the transfer portal. Had those been calculated in the "normal" recruiting, That would have been a haul of One 5 star and 18 four stars.

In that season that would have placed them at #5 in the nation. Lsu holds that sport in 2023 with 1 Five Star and 17 FOUR stars.

In other words, the method used is flawed.

2024: 1 FIVE star, and 18 Four stars again. That would be good enough for a top 10 class.

That's not how recruiting works. They aren't just given "ranks", they are given scores. Those scores later become ranks. They aren't considered 5 stars because their scores aren't high enough.

At no point do the actual rankings ever look at a stat called "5 star" or "4 star". Those are just informational side stats for human consumption.

EDIT to add this. Another aspect that the 247 model does not account for is the depth that teams now have.

You use their model that Ole Miss is #17 in the nation in recruiting. But what 17 now means is a 5 star and 18x 4stars. In 2019, 17th meant 10x 4 stars.

There is nothing to account for. Rankings are relative to what other teams do. What you are saying is just normal things that happen from year to year.

And guess what. Only 11 at a time can line up.

How many were playing at a time before NIL?

The biggest change in the NIL era and transfer portal is actually the number of recruits that are coming in going. While 10 years ago the classes were about 25 on average, the average now is about 40. There are more recruits coming and going than before. However, in terms of where that talent is going and where it's being spread, there is no actual difference.

The product is horrible for many reason, I'll try a bullet list after my rant, I will sum up at the end. These players moving for money every year dilutes the quality and togetherness and it creates internal jealousies, and the ability to move on a whim creates a NO DISCIPLINE zone else I am gone.

1.) The Hurry Up No Huddle ((HUNH) was the beginning of the collapse of the CFB on field product. It created a situation where there were far too many plays, and where defenses could not rotate nor signal in plays, they they had to all go to a base defense, s why worry about teaching them the different defenses like Saban and Kirby used to do from 2008-2013, you can not play them any way. The NCAA should have mandated that the refs walk the ball back to the line like the NFL does. Now we have TIRED PLAYERS on defense, so we have to recruit smaller linemen, who can't stop the run as easy, who can't tackle as well. By the time the defensive players get to the NFL all the packages are new to them.

2.) ALL SHOTGUN all the time, and no huddle, we now have people who can not run a conventional huddle and on 3rd and 2 they are handing the ball off 7 yards deep (STUPID) instead of 2-3 yards deep. In the shotgun the can see the hand off in the old pro set they had no idea who had the ball, the RB or QB. Also, a huddle builds cohesion, they gave all that up to try and get the big linemen tired, now they can run faster, so that is why we see 10-3 games. Old football was worth watching, you had a chess game between coaches, now the QB is running the show, and the defense is in base, the high schools are producing these type of players, they have all been dumbed down. A young QB runs things against a base defense.

Any pro set offense for 15-30 years ago would destroy these base defenses with smaller defensive lines. Add in you have diluted the quality, now 50 teams gets great players not just the best coaches at 15-20 schools, because they want BANK NOW. So lets do the NFL the same way, lets take it from 30 teams to 70 and split up the greatest players, we will have to then add in a lot of marginal players, and all of the sudden you would have far inferior product on the field. U have been watching CFB for nigh 60 years, the last 7-8 years have been very, very poor.

The difference is in the second tier players that the top teams of the conference used to have that they no longer do. Thats why we're not seeing near the blowouts we used from teams like UGA and Alabama. Their second string players arent as talented. These guys who would normally hang around until its their turn to start are now transferring. Bama has had more than their fair share of these guys leave and are now major contributors at South Carolina, Missouri and Tennessee. Its no coincidence the conferences per game score differential has shrunk in the same time span of the transfer portal and NIL.

Better, that's subjective. More competitive, bet your arse. I like it.
