Willie McCovey passed away peacefully this afternoon after losing his battle with ongoing health issues. The state of Alabama has always produced some of the best baseball players to ever play the game most notably Hank Aaron and Willie Mays but you can’t forget about McCovey either. Between 1965 and 1970 McCovey led Major League Baseball with 226 homeruns and 636 RBI’s, ....just to put into perspective of how feared he was at the plate, in 1979 he was intentionally walked 40 times prior to that no NL hitter had ever even drawn 30 in a season. Truly a legend of the game, RIP Stretch.

When I was a kid he was the bomb.

Great man too. Damn I am getting old.

Willie Say Hey Mays and he we're fun to watch on those Giants teams. I remember them like yesterday. Life goes by so fast.

Agree. I grew up watching McCovey and all the players during that era. It was the best.

It’s amazing with how talented those giants teams were they could never win a championship. You remember game 7 of the 1962 WS runners on 2nd and 3rd 2 outs, McCovey hits one of the hardest line drives you’ll ever see right into the Yankees first basemen Bobby Richardson’s glove

I remember those days as well Scrooster. The "Say Hey Kid", the Hammer Hank Aaron, and Willie McCovey are a great sampling of when baseball was really more about the game and the fans of the game.
I didn't watch one pitch of this recent series. That would have been an absurdity in my youth.

I saw Hank Aaron play against the St. Louis Cardinals in Busch Stadium.

He was playing with the Milwaukee Braves.

Wow man that's so cool.
I used to get such a kick out of Chief Knockahoma at Fulton County stadium. Ahh the non-pc days of yesteryear.
I loved reading box scores and keeping up with the standings. Still follow the Braves a little but nothing like back then.

Who would downvote one of the all time greats?

RIP Willie.
