re: Saban's success is not related to X's & O's, Jamal's and Javaughantay's, or 5 star

Saban’s himself has said that he’s a middle of the road game day coach but the best best recruiter. That’s been shown.
But Saban took an epic freshman class with some leftovers undefeated to the SEC Championship game and then took them as sophomores all the way undefeated the following year. Sure, those underclassmen studs carried the lions share but he absolutely had a solid core of upperclassman that Shula recruited making a huge impact.
There absolutely is something to be said about his player development. Everything past that year is all him but one can’t deny what he did with a core of Shula also rans that would be hard to name today.

How good is a coach really who has the best team every year but only wins titles half the time?
Pretty damn good. Because even the best team can get beaten given the right circumstances. From 2003-2008, USC probably had the most talented roster every year in college football. Yet despite all of that talent and all of that notoriety, they won only one BCS National Championship and claimed another national championship awarded to them by the Associated Press.
Florida State consistently had the best football team from 1987-2000 yet only won two national titles with all of that talent. Miami had the best roster in all of college football from 1986-1992 and yet won only two national titles with them; and again from 2000-2003 and yet only won one national title with them.
The fact that Saban is winning national championships at such a clip is both historic and unprecedented. Alabama was the first program in FBS history to win five national championships in 10 years.

Three. 1987, 1989, 1991. Not winning it in 1986 was tragic and they were a failed 2 pt. conversion away in 1988.

But how does that usually translate on gameday? Sarkisian comes up with the offensive scheme for the day and coach Saban and Golding are in charge of the defensive strategy for that particular team. Sark's dissection of Ohio State is why he was making the big money. The 2nd and 26 play that beat Georgia was a Brian Daboll call all the way. Kiffin was always Kiffin and could dial-up what he saw on the field.
Coach Saban's job is to feel the moment as CEO and keep his coaches on point. Seems to me in that respect he is a great game day coach.
