It says a lot about the Baptist Church that WBC would use their name to legitimize a hate group.

No, what it says is that Baptist is by far (> 25 million) the largest and most recognizable Protestant denomination.

Catholicism has more followers than Protestantism though. Why not call it the Westboro Catholic Church?

Just a guess, but the Catholic Church has the Pope, recognized worldwide as the leader of the Catholic Church, that can publicly condemn them.

Have Baptists not publicly condemned them yet?

Also, if they're not really a church then I doubt they would care what the Pope thought.

The SBC has condemned WBC and other supposed Baptists.

Yes, and you know it. Baptists don't have a highly recognized leader of the church. There are several different factions of the Baptist church, none of which Westboro is a member of.

I'm sure they wouldn't/don't. Your whole point was that they use the Baptist church to legitimize themselves. They couldn't do that with the Catholic Church because the Pope could publicly denounce them

So then your point about the Pope doesn't hold water. I ask again, if they use a moniker that includes Baptist Church because that denomination has a lot of followers, then why not use Catholic Church instead?

And on this particular issue, they're beating the extreme right wing drum.

So....is it correct to say when they protest at military funerals, they are beating the left wing drum?

What's your point? You hate Baptists? If so, just say it.

You are either being argumentative for the sake of arguing or else you are incredibly dense. The national news doesn't lead with a story on the naming of the new leader of the Baptist church. The pope is the sole leader of the Catholic Church. The Baptist Church has several factions (none of which Westboro is a part of) there is no one person that is the recognized leader of the Baptist church

No Baptist I know supports their shenanigans.

You can call my mailbox Baptist, but it does not mean it adheres to Baptist theology or ideals. And there is also a difference in baptist and Southern baptist, Northern Baptists, Independent Baptists, etc.

So what? You think if they called themselves the Westboro Catholic Church and the pope condemned them, they would cease to exist? That would get them even more attention.

You said the reason they call themselves Baptists is because it's the largest Protestant denomination. There are a lot more Catholics than Baptists.

This is true. While the Southern baptist Church is the largest group, there are over 31 different groups/Conventions that call them baptists. They can vary widely in what they believe and/or support both religiously and politically. You will get a BIT more uniformity in beliefs as you get into the individual groups...but even in the Southern baptist Church, each church is autonomous. While they elect a President, and hold official votes on particular areas of beliefs and actions, each church is free to believe and act independently.

If they were based in the northeast, I bet they would call themselves catholic.

There are in the world...not in the United States.
(At least I don't think there are...not positive and not sure where to find this information) Westboro is comprised of 2-3 families that call themselves a church.

v.

Which do you think is more accurate? Which more adequately describes WBC?

Almost ALL of the U.S. politicians are in the upper right-hand quadrant. So NOBODY in politics is really left-wing in the U.S.

The issues these idiots at WBC are advocating fall well within the upper half and have NOTHING to do with "right" or "left." It's up or down.
