Blake Sims was 5x the QB Hurts will ever be and he literally was a running back.

What frustrated me to no end was when the commentators would claim that Hurts was somehow the only spark on Bama's offense because he would occasionally get a 10 yard run. The whole damn reason our HB's could never do anything was because of the stacked boxes they faced under Hurts. Hurts was the reason our run game and pass game sucked.

Starting Hurts over Tua because he didn't throw picks is like driving a Camry in a NASCAR race because it gets better gas mileage and fewer pit stops.

Hurts never threw picks because he never attempted downfield throws.

What you're saying makes sense but let me give you the reality of Saban. He hates turnovers, hates them. Tua throws picks in practice, that alone is enough for Tua not to start. We all know he can spin it, knew it from day 1. However, it took a lot for ole Nick to pull that trigger. Thank god he did but, people act like it's because they didn't know what they had, they did, it's a mind set and a way he likes the game to be played.

Ya if only we can get rid of that Sabin guy we will be set. I can't believe you think we won that game in spite of Saban - that is crazy talk.

With bamas defense an offense based on running the ball and an aversion to turnovers will result in a lot of wins and consistent play. It's why bama doesn't drop the wtf losses you see other top teams drop imo. In the end Saban prepared for the eventuality of Tua starting in the bowl practice prep and followed through when it was necessary.

IMO, there's probably even more to it than that. When he came in, the game plan at that point was pretty much set. We're going to have to chunk it all over the field, so there was a limited subset of plays. Even with that factored in, there were at least two times Tua wasn't prepared to execute the play that was called - and that was in game 15.

Of course, it is 100% assumption, but I'd imagine that was happening pretty often in practice too and may well have played a role in the turnovers (as it did in the title game). Simply being able to spin it - which he can do in spectacular fashion - isn't enough.

Thankfully, it all worked out. Bama won the title and by the start of camp next August the problem of not having a handle on the offense will a problem that's way, way in the rear view mirror.
