For an assistant coach, the NFL lifestyle is more desirable by some due to not having to recruit. There’s also the pull of going home that must be factored in to Daboll’s decision. However, there was some frustration on Daboll’s part on personnel matters, multiple sources told The Tuscaloosa News. These weren’t all that contentious, but they were frustrating for an offensive coordinator being asked to put his best offense on the field. Daboll wanted to play freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sooner than he has given the green light to do so. That doesn’t mean that Daboll didn’t like or want to play Jalen Hurts too. That’s not accurate at all. It’s just that Daboll saw what Tagovailoa was doing in practice against the best defense in the country and wanted to give him a chance once the offense started slumping in November.

It's funny that you guys are slamming 21 and this story. Anyone with a working brain that had seen Tua play or practice this year could see that the kid has an insane ability to throw the rock.

I'm not a Jalen hater, but it's clear the staff was asking the kid to do things he's just not capable of doing in the passing game. That's on the staff, not Jalen.

An offense schemed around Jalen's unique talents would be a sight to behold. I bet ole Gussie would cut one of his nuts off to have Jalen for a few years.

Bama still would have lost to Auburn, and if Tua throws a couple of picks, probably loses the MSU game as well.

Freshman mistakes would probably have cost Alabama the playoff.

Saban has six titles. It's time for Gumps to stop questioning him at all.

Tua made a couple of throws against Vandy that when I saw how he delivered and spun the ball I thought OMG. This is a talent.

I would have started Tua a lot earlier as well. It was obvious he was way more advanced in his throwing, and he has running capabilities.

This is not why Daboll left though.

He left because he hates recruiting, he’s from New York and he has several kids + a newborn and he’s happier in the NFL.

Thanks for the title and good luck to him.

If I had to guess I would say he wants to be a head coach in the nfl and thinks he will have a better chance as a OC in the nfl.

I love that these types of stories that normally come out after a crash and burn season are coming out after.........winning a national championship.

Only Alabama I guess.

It can be reasonably argued that not starting Tua earlier won Bama the title. Kirby is very good at what he does with defenses, so I have no doubt he anticipated the possibility of Tua playing in the title game and prepped his team and developed defensive schemes as best he could. But he only had a certain amount of practice time he could devote to preparation. Lacking both meaningful tape of Tua against fresh first team defenses and reason to believe Saban would insert Tua in a tight or losing game, he had to devote the bulk of team prep to the entirely reasonable assumption that Hurts would play any meaningful minutes. So Tua's insertion halfway through was a curveball. Had Kirby had more tape and a real reason to believe Tua was the primary threat, who knows how well he would prepared his defense and formations to handle Tua.
