um.....

A: bullshite.

B: If by "Southern Way of living" you mean imagery of a troubled past filled with slavery and oppression, then yes......you're correct.

I'm stealing this from an RCR comment but it's perfect.....

quote:

Need I quote Frank Everett?
Well I guess I have to.
“There is a valid distinction between The University and Ole Miss even though the separate threads are closely interwoven.
The University is buildings, trees and people. Ole Miss is mood, emotion and personality. One is physical, and the other is spiritual. One is tangible and the other intangible.
The University is respected, but Ole Miss is loved. The University gives a diploma and regretfully terminates tenure, but one never graduates from Ole Miss.”
Frank E. Everett, Jr., B.A.‘32 LL.B.’34

Nowhere in the above statement does it say big foam head.

While we are stealing stuff from the cup, Oxpatch said it perfectly as usual and yes I know tl;dr....
quote:

Go frick yourself. Not everyone who is behind the Bear 100% is a liberal, apologetic change monger willing to offer up everything Ole Miss in an effort to become the Vanilla of the SEC. I was a Col Reb supporter during my time at Ole Miss and I was in favor of teaching everyone else what he meant to us, instead of getting rid of him. I finally came to realize that it doesn’t matter how many times you advertise, give interviews, write stories and books, explain things on public sports broadcasts or beg for people to understand the true significance of CR to our school. IT WILL. NOT. CHANGE. THEIR. OPINIONS. Perception IS reality in this day and age, The rest of the country saw him one way, and it was not going to change, no matter what we did. At some point, I realized that because he was viewed as a racist symbol, it was time to move on. Period. He’s a mascot who was only here for 30 years, not since the schools inception. He’s a foam and cloth character used to entertain kids, pose for pictures and for marketing our brand. I want wins for our sports teams. One of the excuses used by coaches and administrators for why we don’t win very often is that our Old South image makes winning that much more difficult. Fine then. Take the flag, take the Col, stop FDWL because drunk assholes keep yelling racist shite. Now, give me my wins. I believe we’ve reached the plateau of changeable items. Everything else associated with Ole Miss, our buildings, statues, Rebels, etc are not peripheral symbols or recent additions. They are icons. They are permanent and deeply historical, it would not change anything about the schools image if those things were removed or changed. Parking lots are not the answer. Throwing a hissy fit like a goddamned 3 year old in Toy R Us over a mascot is not the answer either. Grow the frick up, act like an adult and realize that this is not some PC conspiracy to end everything that is Ole Miss. It’s our entire family (and ALL that that entails) moving into the fricking 21st century instead of digging in our heels for the sake of ignorance and pride and remaining obsolete for the next 50 years. Ole Miss is GOING to become a leader in the SEC in all categories. Academics, athletics, culture, campus, facilities, faculty, staff and students. You can either swallow your big boy pill, trade in the pull ups for Superman tighty whities, learn to eat with a fork and knife and join the big kids table or shut the frick up and watch re-runs of Barney until you drown in a pool of your own fecal matter and drool.

I wish I could find James Meredith's thoughts on the mascot change. It was online at one time...but now I can't find it anywhere.

Then they would have to dig deeper for another excuse. Don't know what that would be though.

We'll survive. This has so much less to do with football than you simpletons can grasp. It's about moving forward AS A UNIVERSITY.

Then we would realize what it is like to be a State fan. Shitty school, shittier traditions, and of course shittiest team in the SEC. Too easy.

ETA: Anyone going to the game in Memphis tonight?

Also the fact that coaches use your "Old South" image as a reason for not winning is just an excuse to keep their jobs. Fact is it's hard to win consistently in Mississippi due to 3 major D1 colleges and 14 Jucos along with many smaller colleges. Too many for our population it is too hard to recruit enough top players from instate, and not winning very often makes it hard to pull out of state recruits away from schools like Bama, auburn, arkansas, Florida, and LSU.

It's not only about winning on the field. That mascot was also an image associated with our school. I personally would say that we have been winning as a school in general ever since we disassociated ourselves with Col. Rebel.
