I'm not gonna get into this discussion again, (Korin, WE ARE NOT HAVING THIS DISCUSSION AGAIN, the answer is NO), but the only title we have no business claiming is 1967. That leaves us with 5, and quite frankly, I don't care if anyone agrees or not
then why did you not claim any of the other until recently? it's not about what you can claim, it's the fact you didn't start claiming the majority of them until decades upon decades later

We have a legit claim to 4. We were selected by multiple major selectors in all those years.

I get what you're saying, but doldrums wasn't the correct term to use for it.
Doldrums indicates a span of time in which we would've been down.
2008-2014 is the only period that matches the definition.
State or period, not state and period. And even if it was "and", a year is a period.
I think we should go with my original suggestion and just let it drop. Once we're reduced to discussing semantics....

So what? The system was flawed on multiple levels. I have no problem with any team retro actively claiming a title as long as they have a legit claim and argument for it.

There was nothing inside Neyland stadium prior to a few years ago, but they were recognized before then.
There also weren't any retired jerseys in Neyland stadium until a few years ago.

they absolutely were not recognized until 10 years ago at the earliest
excerpt from the AP article following the 1999 Fiesta bowl:
quote:
Tennessee is undefeated, and almost certainly undisputed.
Quarterback Tee Martin and the top-ranked Volunteers claimed one piece of the national championship Monday night, capping a perfect season with a very imperfect 23-16 victory over No. 2 Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.
It was rusty and rocky, but under the new Bowl Championship Series format, the Volunteers were crowned national champions in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll.
The Associated Press media poll will be released early Tuesday, and although third-ranked Ohio State may plead for consideration, the Vols pulled together in the second half and held off the Seminoles.
They hadn't won a national championship since 1951.

After googling, does any team have more interesting lifetime records vs SEC teams than auburn? Muy Interesante.

I beg to differ. I'm quite certain that when a team is named National Champs by multiple publications, it is, at the very least, recognized by the university.
You think that nobody bothered to inform Tennessee that 18 selectors voted them the 1950 National Champs until 10 years ago?
COME ON, MAN
ETA:Just saw your edit, the AP had not named them National Champs since 1951, so what? Who's arguing? I already said that we have no business claiming 1967, which is the last claimed title before 1998

Yes, Tennessee only claimed AP, Coaches, and UPI national titles until recently. Yes, tat is the truth whether you accept it or not. LSU could claim 7, they don't. They claim 3, the titles won in major polls. They don't even claim all the titles that the NCAA recognizes. The NCAA doesn't officially recognize 1950 for Tennessee either. According to the NCAA, Tennessee has national titles only in 1998 and 1951. (LINK ) You can choose to think Tennessee has always claimed those others if you wish, but you'd be wrong.

The NCAA doesn't officially recognize any national champion in football.
As to the rest of that post, I cannot possibly express to you, how little I care about when we started claiming those titles.
I defer to

Did the NCAA name the National champion, or did they just list the selection entity?

i didn't say the ncaa named a champion, i said they recognize a champion(s). The polls listed on the ncaa website are those that they recognize as national champions for those years

when you want to claim bogus national titles, of course what they recognize wouldn't matter to you

You're correct, my mistake. I'm tired.
But, the school is claiming 6, I'm claiming 5, you disagree, the sky is blue, water is wet, a pig and elephant DNA just won't splice, you cannot replace a Gerry Bertier, and frick her right in the pussy.
