I want to go to UGA, not neccessarily because of the tailgating but because of Athens. I haven't heard one bad review of Athens.

No I didn't say any of those things, you just have the most strict drinking rules in the SEC and it kind of kills your gameday atmosphere. LSU and Auburn both allow kegs at the tailgate. I have been to my fraternities tailgates at both Auburn and LSU, I think LSU had like 13 kegs. Auburn was similar and had a great band at the tailgate. In the grove all you get are throw up tailgate tents, solo cups, and horrible football. Plus Mississippi just has a plain disadvantage with respect to drinking laws.

Wait, so you think Auburn is automatically superior because it allows kegs? Kegs are hardly a necessity for a great tailgate. It just makes it more expensive to have a great tailgate without one and have a similar number of beers that a keg allows.

I'm open to a good time. That was my experience though (being pretentious doesn't mean you treat "us" poorly just that you have an air of superiority.. maybe it's the f'n chandliers!)

Grove always seems to come up as first and me (and a lot of others) just don't see why it's so awesome compared to open spaces and no restrictions on drinking.

lol
That said...
If you're in Beijing I'll be there in a little over a month. Where do you watch your football games at? We can make an SEC tailgate somewhere...

People blow that "restriction on drinking" out of proportion. It really isn't as series as people make it out to be.

It's like land shark said people want to hate the Grove. Much like people want to nitpick a good movie. Of course LSU and State don't like it they're our rivals.

I don't care if others hate it or not. I love it, and I have a damn good time every time I go.

It really just seems to me you greatly prefer the open space, which is understandable. I like it to where I'm no more than a 10 minute walk from any of my other friend's tents, so the Grove's atmosphere is great for me. Honestly there are no real restrictions aside from drinking it in a cup, which really isn't a hassle at all for me.

It's actually fairly difficult since Euro snobs tend to run the major sports bars, and they despise American Football in concept. The Americans will be able to push some NFL games for them to show, but that's about it. The even bigger problem is that most of the major sporting events are at 2:00 in the morning over here, and there isn't much money to be made in that, while most soccer matches happen in the afternoon our time. Very rare to see college football games over here on the big screen. I'm going to try to convince a local sports bar I go to to run the Texas/Ole Miss game on Sunday. Give me an email at OMLandshark@gmail.com if you'd want to meet up while you're out there and grab a beer.

I don't hate it I just don't get it. It's a nightmare if you're just a random opposing fan walking through. But I also get how if you're an Ole Miss fan it's great. Would be ridiculous if LSU or Bama or UGA tried to cram 120K people in such a tiny space but that works for Ole Miss.

OMLandshark... help me out for A&M weekend. How do I go about getting a decent spot in the Grove and what bars on the Square do I need to hit up and how early do I need to get there?

I've been to every SEC stadium except for UK and A&M. I have had fun at every place. If you go to an opposing school and act like a dick you'll get treated like one. If you just want to hang out then people will respond likewise.

If I had to rank tailgating destinations that I have been to in the SEC (leaving out A&M), it would go...

1) LSU
2) Bama
3) Tennessee

I went to grad school at Ohio State and have been to half of the Big 10. I also went to every Big 12 school while A&M was a member. I have some friends that go to a random game every year and I have been to Clemson, Pitt, V Tech, Notre Dame, Florida State and West Virginia as well.

If I could rank a top 10 of the places I have been (excluding A&M)....

1) LSU
2) Penn State
3) Bama
4) Clemson
5) Wisconsin
6) Tennessee
7) Michigan
8) Ohio State
9) Notre Dame
10) V Tech

The Big 12 sucks at tailgating. Out of the remaining members, Oklahoma, Kansas State and West Virginia are probably the top 3, which isn't saying much. For being a football power, Texas blows dick at tailgating. I attribute part of that to being in the middle of a big city, but there's no excuse not to have every lot filled to the brim with tailgaters, and they simply don't. They are a bar hopping pre game atmosphere.

I haven't been to the Grove in 3 years, so I'm not sure if its still the same, but while I was there, they would let you start setting up tents at around 6:00 at night. Then again when I first got there, the limit was at 10:00 at night. But keep in mind, if you take the spot of someone whose tent is always in that spot, your tent will likely be moved once you leave.

As an A&M fan, it may be polite to wait about an hour after people start setting up tents before seeking a place to get it. You'll still find a good place, but you won't take any of the long term fans spots since their out there from the very start, which will be appreciated. Whatever you do, don't move a tent and place yours in its place. People will flip their shite and your tent will receive extreme hostility from all your neighbors.

It depends on your age. If you're 18-20, I'd recommend hitting up the Levee (pretty much "The Library Jr"), Funky's (a New Orleans Style bar), or Murff's (a pool/dueling piano bar). If you're 21 or older, then you've got quite a few more choices. The Library is the biggest and most popular bar in Oxford, but the cover charge will likely be at least $20. A good pregame place is Burgundy Room and City Grocery, two very nice bars. Irie has some good beers on tap. Blind Pig has awesome sandwiches, but is a slight hipster place. Proud Larry's will likely have a live band and is alot of fun. Rooster's may be your best bet if you can't go with the library at late night. Of course any of the younger bars are fine too. Heard Boure's now has an awesome bar as well, although I have yet to go there.

And for the bars? Not ridiculously early. Grove? I'd recommend arriving there at least 4 hours in advance, since it will be alot of fun. I'll be there for that game so we may be able to catch up with a couple of beers.

Nobody said anything about acting like a dick. I made that trip a few years back with my wife and 2 daughters and it was just meh. I'm sure it's awesome if you're from there or if you know a bunch of people in there but it was much more enjoyable in the surrounding areas of campus. I wanna say by the baseball field maybe? We got a lot of shite just walking on the outskirts of the grove so I wasn't going to drag my family through the middle of that shite.

We have a winner. Been to 7 of them, and even the ones I knew had shite tailgating, I didn't let it bother me for a second and just had a great time. People who get pissed when nothing bad happens is just ridiculously stupid when they should be having fun.

Thanks OM... will follow that to a T.

Let us know where you are, and we will come bearing gifts of liquor goodness.

We rented a house a 1/2 mile off of campus on Battle Ln. so we won't be driving anywhere.

Four corners of the ambulance lanes labeled "5 Star Rebels". We welcome your liquor goodness and serve our own as well.

Good job. Don't drink and drive in this town, especially on ball game weekends.

The Eagle reported 150K on campus for Florida. I believe it, there wasn't a bit of grass that wasn't covered by a canopy or smoker from West Campus to Spence Park at 8 am.

If that is any precursor to LSU, I'd expect over 200K for the LSU tailgate, and shite will get out of hand before sunrise.
