So Orgeron is 40 and 9 as the LSU head coach.

Florida and TAM in 2018 were winnable games.. we did not lose because of coaching.

Florida in BTR in the interim year LSU loses on a Guice fumble.. Beckwith injury.. Guice going the wrong way on 4th and one. Not a coaching issue. Bad kicker as well

Miss st and Troy in 2017.. no defensive line depth. Below average QB. Conflict with OC especially in the Troy game. So perhaps Troy was coaching.

We lost a bowl game to ND that we should not have lost. We missed two short FGs.

2016/17.. below average QB. Below SEC average DL talent and depth. Below average kicker. Complete roster rebuild in progress.

Now the Roster rebuild is done. Meaning LSU can reload like Bama and Georgia. No glaring holes. Yes there are significant experience issues. But pretty much top talent all over the roster.

Have to get the right Passing game coordinator. Rebuild analyst ranks(mostly done) playoff contender vs good team depends on Brennan and young talent coming together. LSU like most years has 5 tough games. 3 on the road. Does LSU go 4 and 1 or 5 and 0 probably not but they could. On paper 3 and 2 more likely. Whatever.. it will be really interesting.

I'm not sure I buy this. Bama was outplayed that entire game.
Not sure if Bama had a lot of injuries at that point, but LSU definitely had more on-field talent come gametime.
hold on!
by all accounts from sports media bama always has top recruits on the field.
better talent at key positions, top coaching in the games, etc...
bama reloads each year, usually ranked #1 or #2 because of their name and coach.

being "outplayed" has little to do with talent on the field. ever heard of an "upset?"
numerous teams win with less talent on the field or on the court.
LSU dominated the gumps and the final score does not tell the whole story.

Do you think Coach O has demonstrated the ability to field a team that can punch above its weight?

I assume by "punch above its weight", you mean beating a more talented team by out-coaching them. There are only two SEC teams that have recruited consistently better than LSU the past few years: Alabama and UGA. Orgeron has proven that he's capable of outscheming a team with more talent (UGA, 2018), and arguably Alabama last season. Is it Orgeron himself doing the outscheming? I don't think so. I think he knows hot to evaluate talent, both players and coaches, and surrounds himself with quality coaches that can outscheme more talented teams. At the same time, the game is played by college students, who can be distracted, or have a bad game for any number of reasons. That said, no game is a guaranteed win.

Can he punch above his weight? Yes. Does he need to? Not so much.

MSU, UMiss, Ark all have new coaches who won't be able to pull off a division win.

Err... I'm going to assume you mean winning the division. All three teams play each other so at least two of those teams are guaranteed a win in the division.

At least one of the three new hires in the West will strike gold sooner or later. That having been said it will be a couple of years at least.

A&M is a tough one to call. They have the talent. They have the fan base. On paper the coaching staff is as good as you are going to find. Yet every year they come up short.

So for right now it is a three horse race but you have to wonder just how much longer the marriage between Gus and Auburn is going to last. Both sides just seem profoundly unhappy together.

I posted here a few days ago that we had fans that thought O took over some kind of rebuild and people didn't believe me.
