Austin Price • VolQuest Assistant Editor @AustinPriceless Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt has quickly moved on from defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Brumbaugh.

Sources tell Volquest that the first year Vols assistant was relieved of his duties on Sunday following Tennessee's 34-7 loss to Kentucky. Brumbaugh was hired this off-season after Tennessee failed to renew the contract of former defensive line coach Tracy Rocker. Tennessee's defensive line coach drew very little praise during fall camp and hadn't lived up to Pruitt's expectations during the first four games of the 2020 season. As recently as yesterday, Tennessee showed solid play early but faded in the second half as Kentucky gashed Tennessee on the ground.

Brumbaugh signed a 2-year contract with a salary of $650,000 over both years of his deal. That deal was set to run through January of 2022.

The buyout for Brumbaugh is the remaining base salary which would be mitigated by any potential salary they would make at a new job. Brumbaugh made $175,000 at Colorado in 2019, but his salary was set to jump to $450,000 in his second year with the Buffaloes before he made the move to Knoxville.

He was a member of Mel Tucker's staff the last season and he has held the same title at his last three stops having been named co-defensive coordinator at both Maryland and with the Buffs before coming to Knoxville.

That’s kinda brutal—fired after only a handful of games.
Makes you wonder if this may be about more than on-the-field results?

Our DL has easily been our most consistent position group and has played well considering the talent and youth in that group.

Nothing makes sense

DL has been our best position group this season so it absolutely has to be something else.

If not then

Our QB play is the worst in the conference for the 3rd consecutive year and Chris Weinke is still employed

He needs to fire his QB. Not much the DC can do when the QB throws back to back pick sixes

Normally the OC is also the QB coach since they are so heavily intertwined, so I’m not sure how bad Weinke has really been. And I’d say he has 0 control over which QB plays. The biggest failure has been recruiting at the position.

Play calling may also be an issue. Look at LSU on hiring Pelini. He isn't very good at getting his team defense ready. That is on him and that is the same thing with DL coach. Even Odom was fired because he failed to hire the right OC. He didn't do a good job as an HC. Lost to Wyoming last year and brought in Kelly Bryant. He flopped big time. That is on him and should have known better and a few other issues. If Pruitt doesn't get his team on the winning side then something is telling maybe he isn't a good HC?

Pruitt is an ignorant redneck and given his history I would not put a physical altercation out of the realm of possibility.

Surely Tosh is in play if we’re firing a guy 4 weeks into the season.

Otherwise lmfao

It almost has to be. DL hasn’t been great but it’s pretty far down the list when it comes to our problems. Problem number 1 is QB and after that finding ways to work around poor QB play everything else is pretty small in comparison.

If the Great Pumpkin Fulmer is gonna give Pruitt the boot can someone in Tennessee tell him to go ahead and do it now. Bama has not had a good defense since he left and we sure could use him back. We would be happy to send Golding back as a trade.

Y'all really should hire Stark, he's actually the most dangerous guy out there available imo unless you could get Chris Peterson.
