At the time it was completely legal. A bit dirty, MAYBE. (Only saying this because Murray was in no danger of making the play) When I played we were always taught to keep your eyes on the field and expect to get hit all the time. Play "whistle to whistle."

Any injury that took a player out of the game would have been "season ending". ETA
