Keefer was Wouk’s self insert and that he ended up being the same kind of sniveling coward as Queeg was entirely by design.
I read the lesson Wouk was trying to teach and didn’t like it. “Your captain always deserves your loyalty!” or some such. That lesson would have taken better had Maryk not been exactly right in relieving him when he did. Greenwald excusing Queeg being a very real threat just because he had been a sentry in peace time never sat right with me.
