It's from the early days of tobacco spitting and Tide detergent.
Apparently in 1907, Cletus W. Snorklepuss of Hooterville, a little town near Tuscaloosa, was buying some tobaccky at BillyJoeBob's Bait Shop when he had the sudden urge to spit but had no spittoon (paper cups hadn't been invented yet); so he spit into a container of this new-fangled washing powder called "Tide" - and the resulting mixture looked crimson-colored to Cletus and the boys.
Cletus then exclaimed, "wowww fellers - that looks like Crimsuhn Taaaaaaaaahd!" And since the Bait Shop was trying to push their new Tide product, store employees Fannie and Cluberta just told customers that it was the Taahd Row - thus starting the ever-popular "Rowwww Taaaaahd"......
edit - - Is the word 'butthurt' the only word in the Alashammy Dictionary ?????????????????
That's all they seem to know, other than "rowwwww taaaahd" and "whatcha got in that thar cooler Cecil?"

At least we used "red mud" to come up with an original nickname rather than taking one of the most generic animals you can find as a nickname/mascot.

It comes from the fact that Nick Saban is god and we are all pawns in his master plan.
