Okay...they why they making such a big deal for getting rid of our traditions if it isn't a big deal?
THEY aren't making a big deal about it. It's people bitching about not having a mascot that are making a big deal about it. Half are bitching because they want a new one, the other half bitching because they want Col. Reb back.
Ole Miss as a school doesn't care one way or another about a new mascot. We've done perfectly fine for the past 7 years. Specifically the 1st year and the past 2 years.
If I had to pick a one mascot from that list, I would pick the horse one as long as it's a live animal on the field. It's the least intrusive mascot out of the list. Likely no idiot in a costume dancing like an idiot. You could still merchandise it and it would only really be doing anything during the game except for leading the team on the field.
ETA: the only downside is a possible massive pile 'o dookie left on the field......but after the Orgeron years....we're pretty much use to that anyways.

No...they are making a big deal out of it. If they weren't...it would be all over the place in terms of media.

so you're saying the media isn't all over it because the school's making a big deal out of it?
You're a little mixed up on how things work. If the school was making a big deal over it, they would have summoned the media attention on their own. If the media isn't all over it, then they aren't making that big a deal of it.

agree to disagree. i worked within the university....Public Relations. And I can tell you that the university had a lot to do with this getting out to the media because they were making a big deal out of it.....especially Dan Jones. We were pissed at him in the PR office for all this crap that was started.

Hound dogs can make that kind of statement too!

There's pitiful. And then there's Ole Miss pitiful. That list is past sad. But I have a solution to the mascot delima for the Ole Miss faithful. Given y'alls current situation with the tension and all and needin' some PC there in Oxford I suggest y'all become the (drum roll)
The Ole Miss KUMBAYAHS. Fight song could be "We are the World" and replace Hotty Totty with BIG HUG!!
It's perfect for youse guys!

a live shark would be epic
I was thinking the same thing.
Put a live shark in a big tank past the endzone, and it can snap at the opposing players that dare score against OM. Like Uga and that Auburn player.
Then later have a shallow tank and have a fake mechanical shark come out of the water at them.

There won't be a live animal period. Just a fluffy costume. So this whole thing is an EPIC FAIL on Ole Miss' part.

getting rid of Colonel Reb wasnt an epic fail. I dont agree with why he had to be removed, but it had to be done. Jesse and Al would've had protest in Oxford if we hadnt gotten rid of him 7 years ago.
As far as fielding a new mascot, the university couldnt have failed epically because they let the students vote on whether they wanted an on the field mascot or continue to not have one. The University did what its students voted for.
Finally, I have no problem with all these stupid mascot suggestions made by the committee. Whatever we chose, there is going to be a group that doesnt like it or agree with it. Making a list and having people vote on it was the best way to do this. Im sure there are people out there that arent looking at the big picture and for-seeing how stupid a riverboat pilot, blues player, or a Muppet's would look on the field. They are just thinking of what is the best symbol and representation of the state. So what there might be 6 black bears in the entire state and arent anywhere near oxford. So what rebel-lion and landshark have nothing to do with MS. They're at least somewhat linked to the university. Are there bengal tigers roaming around baton rouge? The only linkage bengal tigers and Louisiana have in common is a cival war infantry. So LSU has a mascot that either has nothing to do with their state or is a symbol of racism. Either way no one is splitting hairs about how tigers and elephants have to do with their school.
Every decision about this mascot will be voted on by your peers and has little university involvement. The only thing that wasnt voted on was the take down of Col. Reb, which was a necessary action thanks to the PC world we live in.

Let em protest. Hell. I'm sorry but you look on the basketball and football team...you see a majority of black athletes....athletes that could could care less what the university's mascot is. They come to win games and get a free education and hopefully move on to bigger and better things.
And Dan Jones as well as the rest of the administration have the final say so in this situation. Not the students. They can vote on a mascot, but it's not a definite that that is what the university will get.

I don't like any of these choices. I won't buy any merchandise that has this new image on it
And how would that would be different from the current Ole Miss sales figures with the established mascot?
Is a mascot really gonna help?

You'd be surprised at how much Colonel Reb merchandise has been sold. It's still on shelves. And people buy it every chance they get.

Col. Reb sells like hot cakes. Hell we still sell shite with his face on it even though he hasnt been our mascot in over 7 years. The only mascot I could see that would sell fairly well would be the bear. Just because of little kids, valentines, etc.

How about the Ole Miss Black Holes?
Oh wait, that's racist, too.
The NAACP is going to call Ole Miss racist no matter what they do.
They should follow the lead of Community and become the Ole Miss Human Beings.

Absolutely miserable.
You wonder why we don't win consistently? The people calling the shots come up with shite like this.
