Our D sucked arse last year. The good teams hung 50 on us. I hope you enjoyed it becasue we have a defensive staff this year that can actually coach.
With the exception of the wild rebel, we ran an EXTREMELY basic offense last year due to the coaching change. Snead and Co. have had another year to learn new plays and schemes that we NEVER implemented last year. We were still sorting out our back 7 last year on defense as well. They started to come around during the LSU game.
Not saying LSU will stay the same, just saying that both teams will be better than last year. The difference is who will make the biggest leap. And I will say that LSU has more of a leap to make than Ole Miss.

Facts from the article this is our first legit shot at the west title since 2003. But we wont win it because "we are Ole Miss." Its 54 days till we kick off till then this is just a pissing contest.

I recommend that you read PF everyday to continue the growth of your SEC football knowledge. Because the week befor this article he predicted that we would FINISH in the top 5. So continue reading so Paul continues to have a job for whatever reason.

I used Scout Rankings since they are easy to sort. Rankings are from 2006-2009. Total number of 4* and 5* signed and total Top 100 players over those 4 classes.
TEAM 4*/5* Top100
LSU .... 55.........21
Bama.... 47.........11
OM ......25..........5
UF ......62..........29
UGA .....53..........19
UT ...... 42...........10
Based on these numbers, I still don't see how everyone thinks Ole Miss has enough depth of talent to win a title. It looks like they might have a good starting group with a big drop off after the starters.
"Star rankings" are a point of beginning, but can't really be used to make much of a point. Peria Jerry, Greg Hardy and Dex McCluster were 3-star recruits who are all-conference. Shay Hodge was a 2-star, and burned Florida's arse with a game-winning TD last year.
If any of those guys had signed with FL, AL or LSU instead of OM, I suspect they would have been "ranked" at least one star higher than they were simply because those programs were viewed as being better than OM. Plus, it might just matter a little bit how the raw talents of recruits are developed and utilized during their college years.
Ryan Perilloux was prolly a 5-star recruit but didn't pan out, and LSU's defense last year had a huge amount of raw star power that was squandered by bad coaching. Both of which factors contributed to an OM team with far less recruited "talent" beating you badly in your own place.

FWIW, Finebaum and Brando both say that Ole Miss is a "deep" team in the last 1/4th of the file.

The whole point of that was to try and gague depth of talent. I know OM has a good starting 22. The question is...what do have behind them. Who will play for Hardy on the road @ USCe if his foot is not healed by then. Fall camp always seems to claim some good players around the league. My point was simply that OM was the team that could least afford to lose any starters because the backups don't look to be on the same level.

By far, that is the biggest question going into the season. I'd probably take our starting 22 over anyone except UF (maybe Bama).

Hardy didn't start much last season. Last year we pretty much started Marcus Tillman (run stopper) at SSDE and Kentrell Lockett (11.5 TFLs last year) @ WSDE every game. We have depth on the DL and USC has one of the weakest OLs in the SEC.
If we stay injury free, we have a great shot to win the West. A key injury here and there on the OL/back seven would be very difficult to deal with unless some newcomers step up in a big way.

I understand exactly what you are saying, and yes we are thin at some positions (although NOT on the DL). But your assumption is that, unless a player was "rated" 4-5 star when recruited, he is not an SEC-quality player. That simply is a false assumption. By your analysis, P Jerry and Greg Hardy (as 3-star recruits) would not even be considered as serviceable backups.

The only players that are irreplacable on the team are Jevan Snead, John Jerry, Patrick Trajan and Marshay Green.
unless one of those guys gets injured we can afford an injury pretty much anywhere else.
