The big 12 breakup feels inevitable. They’re the sick man of college football, like the Ottoman Empire in the lead up to WWI.

It feels like what tv wants is 4 regional 16 team super conferences to feed a 4 team playoff. Right now, there’s 5 power conferences, so one is going to have to break up to make that happen. Seeing the instability in the Big 12 makes it the obvious candidate.

With that said, it feels like the Pac 12 is really struggling financially, but tv wants to prop it up because of the lucrative west coast tv market. However, most of those programs are struggling mightily with attendance even more so than the rest of the country where attendance is down essentially across the board.

Also in the background is this movement towards paying players, concussion politics, and the creation of new pro football leagues that serve as an alternative to playing college ball. It just feels like we’re at the edge of a huge transformation of football in general and the college game in particular.
