Why embellish, Vols would have likely made the playoffs in only two of the years you listed.

but 01, 03, 04 are 100% playoffs
2007 with a SEC Championship, which I am not counting, but for relevant sakes, a win there and we are in, again relevant.

Posssibly, it was a crazy year. Vols still had 3 losses before that game, not sure how it all shook out after the conference championships but it wasn't a sure thing.

Vols were in the SECCG in 2004, so back to the original "relevant" we are relevant in 2004, though I do recognize that the 2004 loss in the SECCG probably would have knocked us out of playoff contention.
Same for 2007.

THat will still count for playoff selection. If after a SECCG loss a team is 15th, they aren't in the playoff.

But enough to make the comment, "not been relevant since late 90's" an unfair comment. As in being in a 12 team playoff was a second criteria of relevancy, being in the SECCG is a trumping criteria for relevancy.

Relevance is subjective.
Not everyone considers what the vols have done this century to be relevant.
Zero sec titles and 2 top 10 finishes = pathetic and irrelevant.

Tennessee and Nebraska have the same relevancy.
