Virginia – 81,321,219
North Carolina – 78,830,350
Duke – 78,604,895
Still behind UNC and UVA with much less upside than either of those schools. Even if Duke could become a football power in the ACC it would still not be competitive at the national level. Living alumni is a big deal when it comes to eyeballs and TV revenue. More important tho is how far the ACC is behind the SEC.

have not returned to that dominance since. Duke post coach K could easily be another UCLA in how far they have fallen.

Point remains that they are a shell of what they were under Wooden.
They've been to 15 Sweet 16s in the 38 years since Wooden. They won 10 championships in Wooden's last 12 years.
For comparison purposes, in the last 15 years(sweet16 appearances):
12 Duke
10 Michigan St
10 Kansas
8 Kentucky
7 North Carolina
7 Connecticut
7 Florida
7 Syracuse
7 Arizona
6 Ohio St
6 Wisconsin
6 UCLA
5 Louisville
5 Pittsburgh
5 Texas
5 Gonzaga
5 Xavier
4 Butler
4 Memphis
4 Maryland
4 Illinois
4 Purdue
4 Oklahoma
4 Marquette
4 Villanova
4 West Virginia
4 Tennessee

Are they a shell of themselves? No doubt. But its idiotic to say they have completely fallen off the deep end which is what he was saying would happen to duke

You really don't understand how this works, do you? This about revenue. Nothing more, nothing less. Being an academic power house is meaningless when it comes to ESPN looking for TV sets and TV contracts. Silly little sports that are money suckers and not money producers like Lacross and Tennis with a couple hundred fans that pay $5 to watch a game and are not televised are not part of the equation either. ESPN and the big conferences don't give one crap about academics or any of the goofy money sucking sports you just mentioned. So like I and others have noted, outside of basketball, Duke brings little to nothing to the table as far as being a revenue producing athletic department with a big fan base(TV's). Just like Kansas almost got left in the cold last year when the Big12 almost imploded even with their great bball program, the same exact thing could happen to Duke. Not saying it will, but in this new era of TV revenue driven almost exclusively by football viewership, acting like Duke is bullet proof is rediculous.
I understand all that and I was not acting as if this would be why Duke would get asked to be in the SEC, but there are plenty of conferences that would be ecstatic to get Duke. To say academics doesn't play into it is just ridiculous. Every conference would love to have a program that is a stud in one sport while also achieving academic excellence. I understand money rules everything but damn, you are acting as if Duke is going to get left out of a conference and die as a program. That is one of the dumbest things said in this thread.

Wouldn't it be safe to say it would of been impossible to remain what they were under Wooden? Most schools would love to have UCLA's last 15 years of basketball.

Engie and Tider are just getting ridiculous now. They've lost their argument and are trying to come up with all of these false possibilites to try to prove their point and making themselves look absolutely dumb.

Again, I understand that assumption (and probably would have argued the same thing at times) but looking at the numbers I think the assumption is not safe.
Duke and North Carolina presently have nearly identical football revenues in spite of differences in stadium size that favor North Carolina. I think you have to wonder if Duke might not be able to match or exceed NC's football revenue if they actually committed to football with a larger stadium, better facilities, and admitting another 15-20 marginal students a year for their football program.
There may not be much if any difference even though I think North Carolina has been the bigger name athletic program
Duke has the exact same potential as Stanford. Exact same.

Tell me why Duke can't be the Stanford of the East Coast. It damn sure isn't living alumni because those schools are the exact same size.

They were a perennial basketball power that has now fallen to a #6-10 job -- and is falling further.
Sure, that level of success was unsustainable -- but the point remains that they haven't been the same post-Wooden and they are in the process of becoming an afterthought in the eyes of the country...
Arizona is, generally speaking, a superior basketball job and team to them in their own conference now.

By engies logic, Kentucky is just a shell of themselves that Duke is going to end up just like

Now I have said VT would fall off after Beamer, but all VT has done under Beamer is lose to almost every single top 5 team they have played.

UCLA is far from an afterthought in the basketball world. I doubt they are in much danger of falling out of being a top 10 job. ND has and always will be a top 10 job, and they hadn't done crap in 20 years. UCLA recently had a run of 3 straight FF's

A 35 year reaction is "knee jerk"? RIGHTTT...
Keep telling yourself that UCLA is still an elite job -- when they got turned down by every big name coach in the country and eventually got mediocre coach who is horrible in the postseason.
