But he coached one. That means hes infinitely better than Spurrier.
The only game in 1996 that was close was the game Florida lost, and they avenged it by leaps and bounds in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama needed miracles to scrape by Lane Kiffin and Gene Chizik in 2009.
Saban is currently the best coach in college football and one of the greatest ever, but to act like Spurrier isn't even in his league is absurd. Spurrier won an ACC title at DUKE.

A logical post.
The fricking horror

How many undefeated teams has Nick Saban coached? Only the one, right?
Yes. But he also has three 1 loss teams in addition to that undefeated team. And he did this in a much stronger conference and with two different schools. Spurrier and Saban are great if you are happy with lots of 10 win seasons. But if your goal is to have a coach willing to put in the extra effort to be elite and win national titles, Saban is your man over Spurrier no questions asked.

spurrier is without a doubt an elite coach, but I just like the way Saban runs the no nonsense, process driven program where he constantly preaches about the dedication and commitment to doing what you need to do every day to strive for excellence.
I guess I have been processed, but shite, it is working better than I thought possible in this age of college football.

As for the whole 95 Nebraska v. 09, 11, 12 Bama, I have no idea who would win, but I can guarantee you none of those teams get blown out or especially give up over 60 points. 09 would very likely lose, but 11 would have a good enough defense to keep up with any team in CFB history. 12 had enough balance on offense and defense to beat anyone as well.

You know, to an outsider, this is like discussing a McLaren and an Aston Martin...just saying.

As soon as I saw the thread topic I knew where this would be headed.
We tried to babe it up, but to no avail.

Saban is fantastic. There's absolutely no doubt about it.
But he is also doing this at Alabama, which had a dozenish national titles before Saban was even at LSU. Now, Florida wasn't necessarily a slouch when Spurrier coached there, but they hadn't nearly approached their potential, and granted they had a lot of potential.
So if we were just talking about Florida as compared to Alabama, I could see how it's a very tight race. But if we considered what they both did over the course of their careers, it still has to be Spurrier in my opinion. The Mount Rushmore of the SEC would have to include Spurrier -- winning a conference championship at Duke, bringing Florida five conference titles and a national title, and coaching South Carolina to its winningest teams is incredible.

I think '09 and '12 would lose. I'd pay big bucks to see '11 play that Nebraska team.
That Alabama team, even with the loss, may have been one of the best teams ever. Just incredible power.

I disagree about 12, but that is just because I think our defense last year, while very good, wasn't in the same class as 09 and 11, and in 09 GMAC really hurts our game.
But if you look at the title game from two years ago, AJ played well and we were able to score 21 points on a D that is probably much better than the D Nebraska had. I know it was good, but LSU was absolutely dirty on defense that year. We had a great O line, and Trent. A lack of a serious playmaker at receiver is the biggest downside of that team. And Cade Fosters leg could hurt us. But the game would be great and IMO either team could end up winning.

Yep. In reality this discussion should be had in about 8 years when both are retired. Maybe Les too. He's close but he needs another gear I'm afraid. We'll see.

Then this thread should be comparing Steve Spurrier and Wallace Wade. Both coached at Duke and both won their Universities first national title. There...

if/when Les wins another title he should be mentioned amongst the all-time greats in the SEC

Or maybe just SEC history, when it's all said and done. Saban@LSU/UA and Spurrier@UF/SCar. Like I said earlier, I would think they would be there with Bryant and Neyland.

I think so. Maybe not with Saban, but up there. But he actually has to get another. Tough thing to do.

Saban -better at running a program
Spurrier-better on field coach
