I'm actually glad that it worked out the way it did. If he had been taken in the first round, he would have continued to carry around what I perceive to be a rather inflated ego. Not that there is anything wrong with going in the third round - pretty sure Brady was a late round pick - but it would eliminate any sense of entitlement that comes with the territory of gaining a starting job and ultimately causing him to bust.
This way, he really has no choice other than to be humble and take an opportunity to learn, grow, and mature. Those are the things he needs to do before becoming a great NFL qb IMO.

Needs to do a lot more than that to become a decent NFL QB.

Mallett's the most NFL ready QB. Cam just got done running a simplistic spread-run offense; he has MUCH more to do than Mallett in becoming an NFL QB.

The thread wouldn't last 3 responses before it turned into a complete dumpster fire but I would like to have an honest discussion about where Mallett ranks among his SEC QB peers over the last decade/All-Time.
to put it in a flattering light
Mallett was the warren moon or dan fouts of the SEC. Great numbers but never won at the highest level

If that were the case he wouldn't have gone to the Patriots where he did.

His numbers say he's one of the best the SEC has ever seen.
As an LSU fan I was happy to see him go. I said it on here befoer the draft and I said it on other threads, I hoped he would go to the steelers or pats because he would have time to develop.
Also, I challenge ANY and ALL other bashers on here to find a more complete pure passer to EVER come out of the SEC than this guy. Not either Manning could hold this guys jock as far as making all of those freakingly difficult throws. He made NFL throws on a regular basis.
I am not saying he will be the talent of P Manning, but he has the passing ability. He needs discipline (going to NE he will either get or get out) and time to learn to read defenses, reset and make the throws.

Such as? He has the football IQ and all the necessary physical tools. Enlighten us.

JMO - Dalton was probably the most NFL ready QB in this year's draft... in the way that people are using that catchphrase anyway
IMO Cam Newton is the one who could be the most productive in his first year... because his obvious athleticism may let him succeed like Vince Young did for a while

wut?
Ladies and Gentlemen... Ryan Mallet's best smoking buddy!
A more complete pure passer than Manning? What exactly do you think is Manning's skill set?

While we're being honest today...
When I see white kids talk and act like they wanna be gangsta rappers, I cringe. I always have. There's just something about it that screams "issues" to me. I mean its one thing to listen to rap (which has sucked since Tupac died(or did he?) ).
Its not like I ever saw Ryan Mallet walking around town flat-billin with his pants falling off his skinny white arse.
But you have to present yourself better. You have to, if you want people to take you seriously. That is the hard lesson here. Ryan's parents don't talk like they're from Compton. Mine don't either. I figure I have about the same accent as my parents, or maybe a little less since like most in my generation, I was raised mostly by a television set.
I outgrew my "dressing to whatever pop culture says is "cool" phase about my soph year of college.
By the time he's 25, hopefully he will be a smarter person. I know I grew up a lot in that same time frame.
Its a shame for him and his family, but they'll still be doin fine.
Ryan, be yourself. You're not a rapper. You're not even from a big city. You were born in Batesville and grew up part of the time in Lincoln. Just be yourself, and stop trying to be all "hard" and "cool". I think its obvious now that nobody is buying that shite anyway.

If Patriots needed a QB, Belichick would have drafted him first round, as he was the Pat's top rated QB.
I'll take Belichick's analysis over Carolina's, Tennessee's, etc...

If the patriots had a top 10 pick and needed a QB I doubt they would have taken mallett.

if the patriots really needed a starting QB this year they would have traded for Kolb, Matt Flynn, or picked up Marc Bulger
