I get all of that. We don't have to compete with any other school in-state, but we are in just as much of a battle with the Gumps as they are when in comes to recruiting. The billboard just adds to all the nonsense AU is doing lately rather than just trying to sell the quality of the program and the school in general.

While I cannot speak intelligently to the nature or intent of "all the nonsense AU is doing lately " with regard to their athletic program, I generally get behind this kind of public display of confidence and bravado because it's a cheap and effective way to get people and recruits talking about AU. We are discussing it on an LSU board right now. Putting up billboards in "your own part of the state" is stupid. Putting them up in your rivals back yard is ballsy and presumptuous.

I'm just saying that it's a good idea and a decently produced message. I don't know much about the other things they are doing, but this I agree with. In fact, we need to start doing similar stuff in our state. PB is an effing idiot.

Dear God you are really over analyzing something that amounts to nothing more than a recruiting billboard for the university.

Its not like the plastered the thing across the street from Murphy High School's football practice field. If they did that, then one might wonder.

I'd say someone there said lets do some ads in Mobile, we feel like too many HS students there are going to Bama, USA, USM, UAB, LSU, etc...

Hmmm...where should we put it? Oh on the busiest street of course! Near the malls? Yea, why not!

Go talk to some stupid Freshman and see how many of them pick their college considering the sports program. There is nothing wrong with this. This billboard is for potential students more than it is for the small few big football recruits that might be in the Mobile area.

Who cares??? It's tied to the university and it's an attempt to stir emotions in people about Auburn. Nothing wrong with it imo.

That's promoting the school AS WELL as the athletic department.

So your problem with this billboard is that it promotes sports only? Hmmmm.

I'm just debunking the idea that "fearless and true" has any connection to the University - except through the unofficial fight song that is used at sporting events. I was responding to Golfer's post that stated that because it was a part of their "alma mater" - it makes it more than about recruiting.

I say that:

Auburn Football helmet
Slogan from fight song
"Choose Auburn"

Equals a recruiting ploy. Do I give a shite? No. But I don't see the point in denying that it is what it is.

I don't have a problem with the billboard, I just think it's hilarious. If they wouldn't have had all the other nonsense, Tiger Prowl, Toomers Corner toilet paper, July Fireworks(coming soon), I probably wouldn't think this is funny at all. They seem very, very desperate right now.

I agree, not much difference in these billboards and the ads shown during football games for each school.

Superman,
What about the tv ads on ESPN during Bama's spring game bragging about your 12 national championships and all americans?
Isn't it just a different media?

I remember going to LSU's Orientation 5 years ago and singing the official and unofficial fight songs...guess there is still no connection???

Oh wait, those people who are students go to these games, cheer for their university, and SING these songs...

Get your head out of Bear Bryant's arse for about 3 seconds and realize this is nothing more than a billboard trying to get more HS students to go to Auburn. Not for the next Julio Jones...this is 2009, Rivals is following kids is diapers it seems...don't think any true SEC athlete is going to go so undetected that he had to see a billboard in Mobile to choose Auburn.

Or thinking outside the box. A good marketer will tell you an effective advertising method is one where the product in question is discussed in a different medium.

Looks like they are winning...

Or maybe you could take Auburn's cock out of your mouth for long enough to see this for what it is.

You typed it out yourself. Auburn fight song + Auburn Helmet + Choose Auburn. How does anyone even argue that this is promoting anything other than Auburn athletics?

Like I said before, I don't really know about the other stuff they've done (Tiger Prowl sounds gay, Toomers corner, meh, and July Fireworks, whatever) but this as a stand alone item is well placed, well intended and well executed. To be honest, with Bama down the road, you have got to do some things to bring attention to yourself, and this billboard is a step in the right direction. Tiger Prowl and Fireworks might be a step back, but at least they're trying. Our AD is sitting on his arse counting cell phone minutes, team meal receipts and plotting on how to tell our fans that he's going to start charging for tailgating spots in the Grove.

No shite this is for recruiting. How fricking stupid are you. "Choose Auburn" leaves no doubt this is aimed at recruiting. So what is your point? To state something thyat is blatantly obvious 10 different ways? Thanks, but it really is not necessary.

Do you think the sole purpose of Bama's 12 NC ads during their spring game were to promote the football team?

A good marketer realizes that a prospective student chooses a school for a number of reasons, one of those being athletic traditions...

So you take this billboard and spin it into some idea that the Auburn Athletic Department has now resorted to billboards as their primary recruitment method.

Good, I'm glad you agree. Now, maybe if you convince the rest of the cocksuckers on this thread of exactly what you just said. It appears that they are prepared to disagree with anything I say, regardless of how clearly I spell it out or show something that is blatantly obvious 10 different ways.
