This is a PERFECT example of why every SEC fan should be furious (not just Bama fans).
The first college football ranking of 2024 on Nov 5th had 7-1 ND ranked #10 and 8-1 SMU ranked #13.
- ND had a HORRIBLE lose to NIU and ZERO top 25 wins (tex am and louisville were ranked on Nov 5 but not when they played ND)
- SMU lost to 17th ranked BYU and no ranked wins. (BYU was ranked 9th on Nov 5 and similar to ND, SMU also beat ranked louisville)
Last year ND erases their horrible loss with two ranked wins and stays ahead of SMU who has no bad loses and similar wins.
BUT this year the tables are flipped and when comparing Bama and ND, Bama's top 25 wins mean nothing and we are only judged by our bad loss.
Make it make sense.
We were promised SOS would matter this year.
This committee is a farce and every SEC school should look to dumb down their schedule outside of conference. A horrible move for the sport but this committee makes up their own rules so at the end of the day each AD should do whatever you can to ensure you have an easy path to zero or 1 loss.

The problem is they aren't using a SOS that makes any logical sense. They are using a very basic one that only looks at wins and losses without regard to anything else.
For instance Indiana is getting the same credit for beating Kennesaw State who has a winning record over the dregs in CUSA at 7-3 and Old Dominion who is 7-3 in the Sun Belt than than A&M gets for beating Missouri in Columbia. That's how messed up the system is. A&M has the 91st rated schedule according to them. I don't think even the biggest critic of A&M's schedule would say that is the case in any sane world.
That's also why you have 3 ranked Big 12 teams. You are far more rewarded for playing dogshit so long as it is dogshit that has a winning record over bigger dogshit than playing teams that actually have real talent.
It's going to absolutely kill the sport btw. They are telling every school they shouldn't schedule anyone OOC because there is no benefit and btw you have to do a home and home with those teams anyway. AD's are perfectly happy to do 3 buyout games at home and charge season ticket holders bigly while writing a check for a million or two for them to be a sacrificial lamb instead of trading home games and having to fly the team halfway across the country at significant expense. It's incredibly short term thinking.

To be fair, Texas scheduled OSU twice, Georgia scheduled Louisville and FSU in the next couple years and Auburn has Notre Dame in a couple of years. Alabama has the Buckeyes too I think. Are those games gonna be cancelled now? That would kill the interest level of the sport and turn it into basketball, where most people only give a shite in March.

Perhaps. There isn't much incentive for those games to be scheduled now. Teams like Texas and OSU will be fine as will UGA, they will fill the stadium regardless and sell season tickets. It's the other side of that equation that will suffer. Louisville without a decent OOC game has a meh schedule and they don't have a strong fanbase following.
It's terrible for the sport.
