So...since I'm mental, please tell me how much weight should be placed on SOS as opposed to actually winning the games.
Go ahead...I'm interested in learning the metrics involved, however arbitrary you can make them, to prove that MSU is a top 50 program.
And I know that there's gonna be formulae and hopscotch time frames involved to do so.
There already are rankings that take SOS into account. See engie's posts in this thread.

look at this years OOC.. its pathetic.
We play AT Bama and AT LSU as well as hosting Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Arkansas.
And you feel we need a stronger OOC schedule?
So if you were AD at Mississippi State what OOC games would you try to schedule?

They do this ish every summer proclaiming they have arrived and yet they stumble. Im assuming since they have been kicking Ole Miss while they have been down they feel as they have moved up a level when, in actuality, they have not.
I dont get why they do that...But at the end of the day its still Mississippi State and they suck.

IMO, MSU should have one BCS conference OOC game..
I just think MSU is scheduling cupcakes to at least get 4 gimme wins to possibily get bowl eligible.

Since it's too much for you to figure this out, allow me to explain it... The computer formulas attempt to determine how good a team ACTUALLY is in regards to ranking. They do this via complex mathematical evaluations of wins and losses vs SOS. Anotherwords, they operate on the assumption that a 6-6 SEC team is not truly worse than a 8-4 Mountain West team. If these two teams don't play, how do you know which is better? That's what the formula is there to decide.
Sagarin says we were the 31st best team in the country last year, against the #28 SOS. That's probably pretty close to accurate...
Again...'the computers' indicated that MSU was the 28th or 31st best team last year. Are one years results substantial enough to verify that MSU is a top 50 team? Really?

Go back 2 more years and you'll see us in the top 50 in '09, and in the top 15 in '10. Already been posted.
It's almost as if you're not even reading the thread you're posting in.

Link?
We aren't doing anything besides being excited about football season. What level are we claiming to have moved up to? 80+% of this thread agrees, regardless of team affiliation, that we are currently a program that falls somewhere between #30 and #40. No State fan in this thread has claimed to be more than that. Traditionally, we are probably between #65 and #75 of the current bcs teams(the very bottom). None of us are disputing that.

You think? That's common knowledge that our AD speaks openly about. We played a tremendous OOC schedule from 1991-2009 almost every year, and it didn't do a thing to help us. So, we're rebuilding the program from the ground up. We've got Southern Miss rotating onto the schedule in 2014/2015, while not a BCS team, is a top 5 non-BCS program. After that, we're negotiating with K-State for a home and home in 2016 and 2017.

But if you played in another conference your players would be way shittier. The reason for the talent you have is because they wanted to play for an SEC school. So I think whether or not you were playing an SEC schedule is a wash.
Well said.

Sagarin Top 40 for 3 straight years, 4 out of the last 5, and projected again this year. #15 final ranking in 2010. That, plus being in the Top 40 in attendance help validate MSU as a Top 50 program right now.
Is there anyone here that thinks that State will not be among the Top 50 in 2012 or 2013? That will make it Top 50 for 5 straight years and 6 out of the last 7, and then State's stadium expansion will push us into the Top 30 in attendance, possibly Top 25.

Do you think auburn is that much better than UT and aTm?
Also, the MSU/auburn game was a tossup the last 2 years - once @auburn, and once with cam. What makes this year an auburn lock? Genuinely curious.

So, we are toss up to a team that went 3-9 in the Sun Belt last season, including blowouts at the hands of powerhouses like ULM and Western Kentucky. Got it

You should probably bet on it... Vegas has us at 7.5 in the regular season, so seeing how you've only got us winning 5, it has to be the lock of the century!

Troy plays tough ooc games, usually on the road..But MSU travels to Troy..
This has trap written all over like when MSU went to Louisiana Tech and lost..

Already asked in other thread...
His answer:
quote:
MSU hasnt beat an secw team outside of Ole Miss... Auburn should be fine... In one of its worst offensive seasons AU beat MSU... Overall AU has more talented players/coaches wise... AU should win easily over mullen and so should every other secw team.. Ole Miss is the only game mullen should win in the division
