I bet if you polled college coaches, most of the shite fans say would be far far far from the truth...
See Urban Meyer leaving florida for "health reasons" and then going right over to OSU.

So we should pay Sumlin 3.5 million or so just because? We didn't need to pay him that much to get him here. He made ~1 million at UH IIRC. I'm sure we offered a lot more for the higher profile coaches that turned us down. Fran was also one of the highest paid coaches in the NCAA for a while after we hired him.

Basically +1 what Shane said. We should just pay Sumlin $5MM for fun? If he wins here and wins consistently, he will get a substantial raise and extension.

The elites (which no one seems to be arguing) are Florida, Georgia, Bama, and LSU. You can argue the order but that is really about who is most successful at the moment. Given a choice I would take Florida as #1 because of the depth of resources.
The key metric that is being left out is future potential. A coach looks at a job partially for what they have but also what they could be. That is really where A&M has the big edge. The right coach at A&M could make it into one of the elites because the resources are there. Big school in a big state that is loaded with top end recruits. A&M is the closest AQ school to Houston which has 5% of all NFL players and you could argue that a 250 mile radius from campus (aka driving distance) puts A&M as the most fertile talent of any school in the country.
Arkansas is a great job but it is limited any way you slice it. There just aren't enough football players near by and there aren't enough football players that want to go there to be a consistently elite team.
Missouri has good talent with the StL/KC pipelines but the school hasn't been committed to football to the extent necessary. The stadium, facilities, and fan support is certainly good but a long way from elite. Also if you polled people in Missouri college football is likely to fall behind MLB (esp in St Louis) and the NFL pretty significantly. The potential is there though to be much better and you have a really good coach imo.
Auburn has absolutely fanatical support and great recruiting access. Also they have a track record of success. It's also an attractive job because budgets don't seem to matter if it means winning.
Tennessee has it all but the recruiting base. Absolutely elite in every other way though. Still, that lack of in state talent is a real bear.
South Carolina has a lot of Arkansas' problems except a better base of talent though not quite as deep a pockets (more fans but less Waltons).
The MIssissippi schools are trapped. They have very good of everything but they simply don't have the cash to keep up with the big boys. The fan support is there though.
Vandy has no shot.
Kentucky could actually be pretty solid, maybe Arkie/South Carolina/Mizzou level but they just don't care enough. Football is just something to do while waiting for basketball season.

I think you guys are overlooking the value of Tenn. football. Obviously, Bama, LSU, and Florida have a lead for the moment due to recent success, but one top flight coach and they could be title contenders on a yearly basis. I surely would rate them higher than Georgia and Cowburn due to overall program winning consistency. Tennessee and Alabama are the founding fathers of southern football. Without these two institutions establishing the SEC brand, LSU and Florida might not have had the opportunity for the level of success they have found since the 90s-00s. Imagine how epic an SEC Championship game Bama v Tennessee will someday be......

Yeah. Big 12 North had some weak arse teams. Also, A&M won a Big 12 Championship.
