There's a subtle, but growing problem in college football with how games involving good teams are called by the refs.
Here are some notable teams ranked by OPPONENT penalties:
- Oregon 105
- Michigan 110
- Ohio St 115
- Alabama 120
- Georgia 122
- Texas 131

This completely refutes the long-standing notion that "Alabama/Ohio State/Georgia" gets all the calls
What this means is, a number of the best teams are rarely seeing opponents penalized.
This is either subconscious or intentional, but either way, it's unfair.

Letting both teams play, and not calling subjective penalties - notably holding and pass interference - gives a tremendous advantage to a lesser team.
This is a massive talent or scheme neutralizer that makes a potentially non-competitive game far more competitive.

What's wild is that the general perception is exactly the opposite.
So, not only are Georgia or Michigan's opponents never called for holding, small anecdotes of good teams not getting flagged are amplified to the point of a meme where they're winning because of ref benefit.

A few years ago, Alabama played an entire season without a single opponent getting flagged for holding.
But to hear the broader CFB fandom tell it, they get all the calls along with Georgia because the SEC is "protecting" their brand

Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Texas, Ohio State - all far more talented than 90% of the teams they play are somehow going up against bottom-half teams who miraculously play mistake-free football.

A group from Michigan did a study on penalties a few years ago.
They thought UM's opponents were really getting away with holding.
Their data showed BAMA's opponents were penalized the least in the country for holding.

The refs were the reason Bama lost to Tennessee in 2022 and Clemson in the 2017 NCG.
Clemson didn't have a offensive penalty in 99 offensive plays. Pure BS.
Don't even get me started on all the awful calls and no calls that happened to Alabama against Tennessee last year.
