My take is Indiana is a strange state. I recall a tv show called eerie, Indiana as proof. Also, recall visiting a relative at college in Indiana, strange place.

If your ever in St. Louis there is a morning show on kpnt (The Point) where almost every morning the do a segment called the Headline Hooshe. Basically they find the most messed up redneck stories from around the country.
The one from this morning is actually from South Carolina.

bamafan is SUPER derogatory in Missouri. We've been using it to describe southern dirtlegs since Mizzou owned Bear Bryant and Alabama football in the 60s and 70s.
We still say stuff like, "Did you hear that bamafan on the intercom at the McDonalds drivethru? Jesus! (
