I guess a "spin off" of the Fyffe thread.
Not meaning to sound like,or even imply "it was better in my day" by any means, but there was always something exciting about listening to your team on the radio.Until the 1980's even, it was rare for a team --even the top ones, to be on TV more than 4 or 5 times a year.Basketball tended to be just twice, maybe 3 or 4 times with ESPN until the 1990's or so.
Some of my best memories of childhood are listening to Vanderbilt games with my dad on WSM 650 out of Nashville. WSM carried (and still does) the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights,so we'd be in luck if Vandy was playing Tennessee,Kentucky or LSU who had games on a 'clear channel' not the corp, but like WWL,WSB,etc.
Sure hope Jack is doing well,or at least "comfortable". What a true icon for SEC sports.

I am 42 years old and till he retired he was the only voice I have ever heard doing msu games. Games on the radio just aint the same anymore. Hope he is doing well also.

Scott Stricklin had him on his radio show about 2-3 weeks ago. He sounded great and seemed to be doing quite well.

He has a home here in Tupelo and I've seen him at restaurants a couple times since his retirement. I always speak to him. He's still got that dry sense of humor and seems to be doing fine

He's doing well, all things considered. His dialysis treatments are what actually made him decide to hang it up, I believe...
I ran into him at the Auburn game last year. Bought a ticket and came in and sat/acted just like a normal fan -- which I would expect no less from him -- even though he could probably name his seat in any skybox in the stadium and was probably invited to most of them.

"And today State fans, the Sonic Drive of the game is my drive home to Tupelo."

I agree. It's really difficult for me to listen to a State game and not hear him. Voices that still stay with me are Cristil at State, Hawthorne at LSU, and Manning for Saints games.
