Why don't you bring back white hoods and sheets and rebel flags too?

Why don't you go kill yourself?

I don't think they started calling it "Ole Miss" because that's what they called the slave owner's wife, but because it was short for "ole mississippi."
You are incorrect. I have old football programs from the 1940's that state the name "Ole Miss" is an Old South term the plantation owner's wife. She was called the "ole missus" which is synonymous with a genteel Southern lady. The daughter was referred to as the "young missus". Now the official university version is that the term was coined by Miss Elma Meek of Oxford when a contest was held in 1897 to name the yearbook. That year the "Ole Miss" debuted and by the very early 1900's the name was synonymous with the university.

Another honest rebel. I can't get Rebelgator back for this one, though:

Rebelgator Question for you: Why is Col Rebel a racist symbol and should for ever be buried under one of the great oaks in the Grove yet the term "Ole Miss" is OK?

It's the general celebration of the fantastical Old South.
What's the "Old South". Did everybody in Mississippi and the South love the "Old South" or was it just certain group of people that enjoyed the "Old South". Was everyone welcomed in the "Old South"?

I hope they bring back the Colonel.
"Blackie the Black Bear is crying" makes for a shitty song title.
On a side note, does all the talk of bringing the clan back into the fold at the university distract from the coaching search?

Well first off, I don't buy Toddy's explanation for two seconds. I've heard about 10 different ones including that one and I heard that one from the least credible prof I've ever had.
Secondly, that term isn't common knowledge as far I as now. Hell, I didn't have any idea till someone brought it up in Southern Studies class sophomore year.
Finally, I never said "Col Rebel a racist symbol and should for ever be buried under one of the great oaks in the Grove." I happened to not have an issue with it when I got here. Didn't pay much attention to/ know that much about OM before I got here. I'm not one for PC, but people have to realize that fighting a battle that has already been lost does no good for any party in this other than those that wish to seek pleasure from Ole Miss' infighting (read MSU).
Satisfied?

These arguments go on forever. No ever changes their mind and everyone walks away pissed off.
My people were Rebels. They didn't care about slavery either way. They didn't care about having their "own country." If left up soley to them, the rich plantation owners could have gone up North and they could have settled the whole damn thing. But no. They had to fight because our politicians fricked us over then worse than they frick us over today and that's quite alot. And they fought because they knew the Union would come in destroy everything, including the lives of innocent southern families and that's exactly what they did.
It wasn't about state's rights. It was self defense in a fight most of us didn't want against a far larger and wealthier foe and they didn't back down.
That's why I want Colonel Rebel back.

The reason is that today, when you say "Ole Miss," the first thing people think is the University of Mississippi. When you show someone the Confederate Flag, the first thing they think of is either the Civil War or the Ku Klux Klan.
Once again, it's a matter of perceptions.

The "Old South" is a myth perpetuated by Southern apologists to convince themselves that the Civil War wasn't something as bad as it was.

I'm not the one with the bleeding vag whose school can't figure out WTF to use for a mascot. Seriously, the state is dead fricking last in every conceivable category and the state legislature is wasting time bringing back a KKK icon to represent the football team THAT THEY JUST GOT RID OF. Your state/alumni/fans/school suck at life.

Does not compute. Non sequitur.

quote:Nope - so I might have embellished a bit with the "should forever be buried" stuff. But how could you have possibly had an "issue with it when I got here" if it wasn't a racist issue? He was just an old man with a white beard. How harmless is that?

"Ole Miss" is what it is. No embellishment needed. Been there and been that for over 100 years. Deal with it.

this is why you're a thundercunt. our school DID figure out what to use for a mascot.

Congrats....you're probably in the 40-49 range in every one of those catagories.

Show me exactly where it's our alumni/fans/school trying to bring back Col. Rebel. The fact that one of the announced location is at Davis-Wade Stadium for the LSU-MSU game should tell you a lot....

If you would attend Derrick Zoolander's school for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Do Other Stuff Good too you would have noticed I said I DIDN'T have an issue with it. I don't give two fricks about a mascot. Ole Miss could have been the fighting flamingo's for all I cared. I just wanted W's on Saturday.
The only question I've ever had concerning a Col. is how UNLV gets by.
Also, nice use of thundercunt, Pank.

so your theory is that it's MSU fans trying to sabotage your massive edge in college athletics by bringing back a beloved mascot?!?
