The problem is so few leave the region of "HURR DURR HAIRTIGE AND TERDISHUN" that they do not fully grasp the perception it displays.

Here ya go...

quote:

Sherrill never calls Missisippi "Ole Miss," and the public criticisms he aims there are too subtle to stir the SEC office, yet they stab straight at the heart of Ole Miss recruiting. One of Sherrill's favorite lines is "When the National Guard was on the doorsteps of [the universities of] Alabama and Mississippi, black students were being admitted here."

By the way, that's a blatant lie. Mississippi State integrated after Ole Miss and Alabama. That teaches us another lesson in that, for a lot of people, perception is reality. So much of this is about fighting PERCEPTIONS of racism and not actual racism. shite, you yourself perceive a lot of things (outside political forces comment you made earlier, for example) which aren't exactly the case. I think we all do to an extent.

I agree with all that pretty much.

If I was a Mississippi citizen, I'd vote to bring him back.

Sounds like ole miss is suffering from an epic case of white guilt. There are more things in this world to get offended about then a Damn mascot at a university.

If I were a Mississippi citizen (assuming this ever ends up on a ballot, which I'm pretty sure it won't), I'd cancel out your vote.

How long until Rebel gets dropped and they become the Black Bears? Or simply, the Bears? Or worse!

Or, maybe they're trying to become Auburn and have multiple mascots.

I'm a man of my word, and I will back off.

But I still think the football recruiting is over played. You are right. Tubbs was a good coach, but he was not exactly stellar on the recruiting trail at AU. He developed some good/decent talent into great talent. I was mainly referring to Coach O, and If I remember correctly that's when yall started getting serious about the mascot change. But I don't think that was a main factor in helping getting kids on campus. It was bc O was a great recruiter.

I'm just a firm believer y'all get consistent with winning, no racist recruiting tactic will ever be enough to hold y'all down. As I said before I believe most SEC schools have a foundation into racist traditions. LSU's mascot is named after a civil war regimen.
It's been nice arguing with you and can admit when I'm wrong, but I gotta get back to work.

Have a good one and uhh, go to hell.

Well, the Colonel was removed in 2002 when Cutcliffe was the coach. The idea to bring in the bear was under Nutt. The Orgeron years really saw little-to-no mascot fuss, to be honest.

Oh yeah, of course, I wasn't making that argument either.

You're right. If we'd just WIN SOME GAMES (Coach Nutt, you listening? Of course not.) people would just ignore all of the fuss.

It'll be about as hard as passing an initiave that bans incest in Arkansas.

The Mississippi Secretary of State has given the go ahead for a statewide referendum on bringing Colonel Reb back. Supporters have to get 100,000 signatures for it to be placed on the ballot to be voted on during the 2012 presidential election.

This is BS. The Ole Piss Rebels will be re-branded. Ole Miss will be dropped as will the rebels. This is a long term re-branding of the school. This started with the rebel flag bans, then the song dixie, then the song from dixie with love, then Col Reb. Get ready not to long from now it will simply be The University of Mississippi Bears. Not the Black bears, just da bears!

You do know we still play Dixie right? And Dixie flags were banned 30 years ago. Does anyone need team icons next to their names when someone talks like this? Obvious LSU fan

I never really understood the rush to political correctness regarding your mascot. It is a waste of time- and shows a great deal of ignorance towards OUR ACTUAL HISTORY.

Seriously. Is it really that freaking offensive- or have people in this country run out of things to bitch about?

LSU's team nickname comes from a Confederate regiment. Should we forbid ourselves from saying "The Fighting Tigers"??? Half of the buildings on LSU's campus are named after Confederate Generals. How offensive!!!! How can these poor kids concentrate on their studies under such oppression????

And then- there are Parishes in Louisiana like Beauregard....AND THEN THERE'S FORT POLK!!!!!!
eeeeahhhhhhhh!!!

How far should this all go?

This country needs to remove this giant f-ing chip off it's shoulder.

That is all.
