quote:That's not totally true and you know it. If it was, Pat Sullivan would be the head coach at UAB right now. Little Bear and his buddies on the Bama BOT squashed that move for two reasons. One, they couldn't stomach an Auburn legand coaching at the University of Alabama - anything and two, they do not want UAB to be successful in anything athletic because they are afraid it will take away from the mystique just down the road in Tuscaloosa County.
the alabama board has nothing to do with it

UAB gave sullivan the cold shoulder before any contract was ever discussed. pat was smart enough to realize from a stability stand point that samford is a much better coaching job than UAB. and alabama has been or never will be scared of uab taking away from their "mystique". quite simply, uab can not sustain a profit with their athletic programs and that is not the fault of the BOT as much as the few UAB supporters try to convince themselves it is.

The Alabama Board of Trustees did block Jimbo Fisher from becoming the head coach at UAB, because he is a young energetic coach and would bring a lot of excitement to UAB's program.
The Bammer Board of Trustees did not want that to happen

they blocked it because uab couldn't afford to pay the contract they offered him.

UAB's attendance would have increased with Jimbo Fisher as their head coach and that would have generated more revenue to pay his salary.
The Bammer Board of Trustees decided to hire a loser like Neil Callaway instead, because they do not want UAB to be successful in any sport.

the attendance would have to increase ten fold to pay the salary they offered. and committing millions of dollars to a expected but not guaranteed event is not sound fiscal policy. which is why the BOT blocked it.

Slim,be honest. The U of Alabama board is made up with a lot of guys who loathe UAB athletics. They want it to fail (the sports, not school)and will do as little as humanly possible to help it. Guys over the years like Sid McDonald ,Frank Bromberg and Gary Drummond have been quoted about their comtempt for UAB athletics.

not going to deny uab's athletic department doesn't have many friends on the BOT. but that doesn't change the fact that a program has to be financially stable before they can offer multi-million dollar contracts to football coaches. if uab can't afford to pay a football coaches contract it's not the responsibility of the other schools in the system to bail out an athletic department. if uab's athletic department was financially viable there would be nothing the BOT could do about it. if they would cut out the football program and focus on basketball and baseball they would probably be in the black and put much better products on the field.

BOT should have never approved that football program without a solid commitment to the program. No doubt UAB has to pull its own weight at some point. But those who approved it would have been in the right to have shot it down back in 94 or 95 or so. It was going to be long process to generate support in football in Birmingham for a team not called Alabama or Auburn. South Florida's success in Tampa is the exception, not the rule.
Since it was approved, its been nurtured along half-heartedly. If they approved it,they should have put more effort in to it. Again,UAB has to do a better job themselves, but the support they get monetarily from the board is lukewarm at best.

UAB's purpose in this state is to make doctors. Not to have multimillion dollar coaches that Alabama- Tuscaloosa has to foot the bill for.

I could be wrong, but I believe Missouri has won more conference championships than Bammer has, been to more NCAA tournaments than Bammer has, and been to the Elite 8 more times than Bammer has.
Missouri also has built a new basketball arena in the last 10 years, so they have much better facilities in basketball than Bammer does.

When did James Willis become an Auburn legend? I must have missed it.
If you think of Auburn footall players, Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson are the first two players who come to mind. I can name a bunch of Auburn players who were better players than James Willis just in the 15 or 20 years that I have followed Auburn football.

It'll never happen, but I want Brad Stevens.

James Willis =/= legend in any sense of the word. There is also a world of difference between being a position coach and the head coach, who is usually the face of the team year in and year out.
I have known people who were at UAB at the time when the football program was being discussed and initially approved. One quote from a UA board member was "You are students in the University system of Alabama and should support the football team in Tuscaloosa, not want one here." When a student stood up and asked if they could get student tickets or home games in Tuscaloosa, the board member just ignored the question.

I live 7 minutes from Mizzou Arena. Believe me, Mike Anderson will leave this place! Hell, even the top players in state dont even want to go to this school.
The last true hooper to come out of this school was Anthony Peeler! Yea I know!
Imagine what Mo Williams or Gerald Wallace would have done in Anderson's offense.
