richt's team was predicted to be #1 and everyone predicted a downfall. it happened but he is still in the top ten. lsu was predicted as #6 or 7 to start the season. well, where the frick are they? out of the top 25, really? seems like richt is a better coach than miles according to your bullshite criteria that since we were #1 coming into the season, we had to win the national championship or richt sucks.

I have never understood the hype and respect given to this guy

Before Mark Richt:

From 1993-2000 (8 years) UGA was 57-35-1.
No SEC Titles.
No SECC appearances.
No "Big 4" Bowls appearances.
1-7 vs UT
1-7 vs UF
2-5-1 vs AU
5-3 vs GT (3 game losing streak 98-2000)

________________________________________________
UGA + Mark Richt:
81-21 career record (46-18 SEC)

5-2 in bowls (2-1 in BCS Bowls)

2 SEC Championships (2002, 2005)

3 SEC East Titles (2002, 2003, 2005)*Tied UT in 2007, but I ain't counting it like Ole Miss would.

5 Top 10 finishes (2 Top 5)

5-3 vs UT
2-6 vs UF
5-3 vs AU
7-0 vs GT

I'm not sure what to say to help you understand or respect those things. He turned a 7/8 win program into a 10/11 win program. We went from hoping for a Citrus Bowl to being pissed off about having to play in "just" the Sugar Bowl. We went from getting whipped by Tech, AU, UT, UF to only struggling with UF. No SEC titles for UGA from 1981-2001! Now you're saying he sucks because we didn't win an NC.

I'd suggest you compare his first 7-8 years as a Head Coach to others..then maybe you'll understand and respect him?

Reading comprehension has always been an issue in college discussions and I guess it always will be.

Two issues I have already addressed.

The first is he is good, not elite. He simply gets way too much credit for being ranked as the best coach in the SEC as I have seen mentioned several times according to some analysis. So while he has done a good job making UGA better, he still has not and in my opinion will not lead UGA to the next level and win a national title or two like LSU and probably Florida this year.

To rckchalk
2) I already said LSU is a bad team, but we have already won 2 NC's in the last several years. We were not expected to be great in and in my opinion were ranked that high based on last years success. We still have been a very big letdown but last I recall last year had a fairly good ending.
Also, it is not simply that UGA lost to Florida and Bama, two pretty good teams. But they did not belong on the same field with those teams during a year with their best talent in 20 years.

I've never seen anyone call him the best coach in the SEC. I'm also not sure what the "next level" is...he's winning 80% of his games..the next level is what 90%? 100%? An NC? He's already had season just as good as Saban's 2003 and Les Miles 2007..but the "formula" just didn't see fit to award us an NC...

What we have in Richt is a guy who has shown he can keep UGA winning at a high level..no matter who the QB (he's done it with 3 different ones), even when he loses OC/DC (he's replaced both), even when he has to start a true Freshman QB (hows that RSFr working for Les?).

This isn't close to our best talent in 20 years.
2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 teams were much more talented (as evidenced by the NFL drafts/AA teams). We were ranked #1 preseason because we finished #2 last year, had the nations longest winning streak, and returned our QB and RB. Before we even got started we lost 2 of our 5 best players (Owens and Sturdy) for the year and another for half the season.

In addition to that this team is RIDICULOUSLY YOUNG (we started 3 true Freshman and 2 Sophs on OL for example).

And on top of that we might damn well end the year with an 11-2 record and in the Top 5/10....with the toughest schedule in the nation.

2002 and 2004 were both better teams. next year's team (with stafford and moreno) will be the most talented yet with experience and returning starters everywhere.

In his first seven years as a head coach ever, he has won two bcs bowl games and two sec titles, while amassing somewhere around 80 wins. that sounds pretty damn elite to me. i dont think there's anyone else in the country with those credentials in their FIRST 7 YEARS of being a head coach (granted bcs bowl wins doesnt apply to many old coaches in their beginning years).

First off let me state that Richt is one hell of a coach! Just look at the difference in the FSU program since he left. The only knock I can bring up against Richt is his record against Florida, loosing to Zook twice with superior talent is baffling. That in my opinion is the one and only thing that keeps him from being put in that top 2% of elite coaches along the likes of Saban, Stoops and Meyer.

well, considering 2% of 119 (number of teams in fbs, and thus number of coaches) is under 3, itd be pretty hard for richt to join that group that is already too big for your description.

Sorry I am late to this party...

Dawgorama sums it up very nicely above, but I must also add a few names.

1. Larry Coker...has a MNC to his credit, less of a coach than Richt.
2. Tom Osborne. Living legend. Political career now due to his head coaching popularity. Coached from 1972 to 1994 without winning a title. Ran a solid program, just couldnt seem to get over the hump for years and years. Finally hit pay dirt, the rest is history.

Richt is far more Osborne than Coker. He has built a program of consistency in Athens that will have its share of ups and downs. The right year will come around and he will win it all.

I dont think Richt has had the fanfare that Meyer, Saban, or maybe even Miles have had during their tenures (and certainly not what Spurrier or Fulmer used to get). I think he is a very very good coach, and a fine man. If UGA beats Tech then finishes in the top 10, yes the season is disappointing, but good lord, not burn someone at the stake disappointing.

Well here he is doing it again. Since I saw the other Mark Richt thread I had to bump this one.

On his way to 3-4 losses during their 'championship season'.

3rd loss

2nd most penalized team in NCAA

Richt =/= elite

UGA is a second rate program who mascarades as a great program.

Sorry UGA fans, but Richt will win just enough to keep you thinking he is the right man for the job.
