Even though you are (ostensibly) traveling east, you may want to investigate the hotels just off of the I-10 exits and on-ramps in areas south and east of BR (Prairieville, Denham Springs, Walker, etc.)
I wouldn't categorize La. as 'the Swamp'. That is Florida's football stadium :)
You may see trees and waterways on your way eastward, but you will also see farmland, natl parks and forests, towns, etc.
'The Waterboy' image is grossly inaccurate...
Go to www.lsusports.net, lsu.edu, and visitbatonrouge.com and there are several pages and links for visitor, parking, taillgating, restaurants, etc.

I was at first confused by this post when you said heading to the "swamp" i first thought of UF. However, as many have posted there will still be plenty of places to stay. Anything right off I-10 will be good. Could even try The Renaissance near Mall of LA, I'd imagine the farthest you'd have to go is Denham but there will be available hotels 20 miles from campus. My advice is to get out there early, talk to everyone and mingle around campus. People will give you food/drinks, just tell them your daughter is a LSU freshmen and you are an aggie. they'll eat that up. It sounds cliche, but nothing beats a Louisana Saturday Night

Look for places to stay on I-12 (Walker and Denham Springs), they are building three brand new hotels right off the exit at DS. Get there early, be ready to be called tiger bait, find some good food, and simply have a good time.
