LSU : 1980 :: Tennessee : 2010

In 1979, LSU kicked McClendon out the door without letting him have the dignity he deserved. What happened after that was a nice 25-year curse. LSU had good teams and bad teams, but you knew they wouldn't win a national title.
Tennessee kicked Fulmer out the door without the dignity he deserved in 2008, and Tennessee fans can go ahead and prepare themselves for a couple frustrating decades.
Your program got full of itself, made an outside hire to replace an inside man, and it's about to be rough.
Anytime you make an outside hire, you are hiring a person who has no loyalty to your school.

this is the truth.

A lot of my fellow LSU fans didn't know that in December 2004.

25-year curse.
A bit overstated, don't you think?
Also...while I see the similarities between Fulmer/McClendon...
There are NO similarities between what Kiffin did to Tennessee and the unfortunate fate of Bo Rein.

What do you mean by "outside hire"? Someone who didn't attend the school?

You know whose program will be just fine? Penn State.

Urban Meyer isn't a Florida grad, but he says he never wants to Coach anywhere else and he is a Florida man now. he wasn't when Florida hired him. It's a hit/miss kinda thing.

Mac's final 7 seasons:
After the first bad year, he had 6 more to get it together and didn't. His last game as coach was a dominant bowl win.
Sounds to me like he was given chances, and went out with a solid win.
I understand the man is a legend, but since I was only 2 in 1980 and have zero nostalgia for things that happened before my time, I am looking at this honestly and realistically.
Some times you have to force people out because they won't go willingly....see Bobby Bowden. You can't live off what you used to do forever. If you aren't producing, and you know you aren't you can't stay just because you are a name.
Nobody wants to feel like they are past their prime or irrelevant, but it happens to all of us eventually.

McClendon's 1973 team lost 3 games in a row to end the season 9-3. Those games included Alabama and Tulane. This was the Tigers' first loss to Tulane since 1948 and signaled the beginning of a decline. During McClendon's last 6 seasons as LSU's head coach (1974-1979), LSU had no appearances in the final AP Poll. During this time, LSU's record was 38-29-2 (.551 winning percentage). The Tigers also lost to Tulane in 1979, but that was followed by one more game, a 34-10 win over Wake Forest in the Tangerine Bowl, McClendon's final win.

When you go coach shopping, and you buy one, whether you like it or not, he's always for sale.

I doubt Urb will leave Florida, but only because nobody will pony up and pay him what it would take to get him. But don't be fooled--there's a price tag on him.

With enough time, anyone can do anything.
I'd rather have had 10 good/decent seasons instead of a decade of suck with one really good (but not great) season.

the 25 year curse starts w/ bo rein's death, not w/ mac being forced out.

xiv you make some good points and having been a LSU fan since 1965 and having graduated from LSU in 1983, I remember most all of Cholly Mac years and remember registering for the spring semester when the news came across the wire about Bo Rein. As the other poster said , a little bid different in circumstances. However, I have ofter wondered what really direction we would have travelled had Bo Rein and his pilot not been killed on that fateful January night.

For the next ten years, Tennessee will be no better than they would have been with Phil, except they're going to see their program in a mess with two or three more coaches coming and going.
Florida State won't be elite in the next decade. In 2020, pushing Bowden out will have accomplished nothing.
Penn State has been smart. Screwing over an old guy never does you well.

I see your logic take Michigan and Nebraska for example. Michigan wanted a Michigan man ie Les Miles someone with obvious connections to the university but went "outside" the Michigan family in Rich Rod and as of now are not producing and Rich Rod would easily jump ship if more money at a USC was offered. In that same breath though Rich Rod had WV ties and he left them standing cold.
Nebraska went "outside" the conrhusker family and failed miserably before Pelini got there and he had ties to their university (one of the qualities they looked for) he was on the coashing staff a few years back and had a great defense.
So ultimately its not a guarantee that a coach with ties to a university will be loyal but more likely than someone with no ties to the school. Also at some programs there's a certain culture to it and a coach must fit with that culture in order to be successful with fans, administration, players, tradition, etc and coaches with ties to the school usually fit in with the culture of the school.
