re: Sanctuary Cities - 300 identified, Cities Counties and States

quote:
it's a defacto sanctuary city.
To build off of this, there was a story on the NPR here about how a lot of cities have found themselves in this position not out of a particular political leaning, but due to legal precedent and liability for the taxpayers. Here's the crux of the story about Lehigh County.
quote:
Sweeney says this policy has nothing to do with protecting illegal immigrants and everything to do with protecting the taxpayer. Which is a lesson Lehigh County learned the hard way, when Ernesto Galarza was arrested in 2008 on drug-related charges. Galarza made bail, but based on an ICE detainer, was kept in jail for an entire weekend. As it turns out, though, Galarza was not an illegal immigrant. He was an Allentown resident born in New Jersey. He sued ICE for issuing the detainer request and also sued Lehigh County, even though, as Sweeney says, they thought they were just following orders. "If that immigration agent has made a mistake, then the county or city is therefore on the hook for any associated costs or litigations," said Sweeney. In 2014, a third circuit court judge ruled on Galarza v. Lehigh County. This ruling set national precedent that ICE detainers should always be treated as requests, not orders. Counties can honor them, ignore them or require further documentation, such as an arrest warrant or a judicial order.

quote:what amazes me about the pedro experience is how he was historically bad at both 3b and 1b for totally different reasons. at 3b, he was pretty good w/ the glove and got to probably more balls than he should have, but when he threw to first it was anyone's guess. so everyone thinks -- gosh, just get him to 1b and this will be resolved. he gets to 1b and is even worse defensively due to his sudden inability to catch the ball.
Pedro Alvarez
we've been playing baseball and keeping stats for over 100 years and he managed to be historically bad twice at different positions? i guess it's a tribute to the pop in his bat and the desire of the organization to make it work that he was given the opportunity to continue to see the field. supposedly he worked hard at both issues, but just couldn't solve it.

you know, people say "defense at first base? how hard could it be? it's first base."
i don't know that bell is bad in a pedro - "i don't understand how this can be happening at the big league level" - alvarez way, but he's just awkwardly learning out there. Polanco kinda looked that way in RF when he came up too. just not playing naturally and unsure.
but yeah, he's gotta improve.

I was at the game where he hit the grand slam. It was awesome, PNC erupted.
He has a really good approach at the plate, so hopefully he can keep making ground at 1B. that defensive substitute stuff for him has to end. His bat is just too valuable.

Bob Walk on the Pirate broadcast: "how have we managed to draw 6 walks w/ this strike zone?"

no, there's certainly potential, and they're no reason to hit the panic button. more time for taillon and kuhl. more time for bell. cole gets reset. polanco is coming into his own as a rising star and clutch hitter. could shape up pretty well next year, but damn the central is just impossible. especially if they go cheap again in the offseason. that's probably what has the people here most angry, is they didn't address lingering problems in the offseason, and were cheap, and ended up the existing problems getting worse.
i'd like to see cutch swap w/ marte in CF, but lord knows what's wrong w/ him.
i don't know if it's clint hurtle or what, but how this team manages to have a whole month every season where they are just awful is perplexing -- especially when the organization knows they did it the previous season and it makes too big of a hole in the standings to emerge from.

watching cole and cutch struggle has been enormously frustrating.
the way they choked coming out of the break w/ a pretty easy slate of games ahead of them was terrible.
the game monday was the season in a microcosm -- fight back, in a position to win, piss it away when guys that shouldn't struggle do in a bad spot. have a chance to bust it wide open w/ bases loaded, no outs, up 3-0 and SRod strikes out, you get a run from JHay but you know it's not enough and we get a 4th inning of the Jeff Locke relief experience.
One at bat away and one pitcher away from doing what you need to do, but just short.
they'll end up over .500 and a game out of the playoffs and kick themselves over missed opportunities -- just like last year.

Shouldn't Arrieta be out of the game? Wasn't that two mound visits from the dugout this inning?

not surprised the ruling was out after reviewing whether arrieta was blocking the plate. the pirates broadcasters didn't really know how it was going to go. i don't think anyone disagrees that it's a good baseball play, but still real confusion about that rule.

quote:the pirates are really playing their worst baseball of the year at a pretty awful time. The cubs are certainly the best team in baseball, but the sloppiness defensively and mistakes really started Sunday against the Reds and has continued in these two games.
yeah, the PIT broadcast is a funeral
i don't think even the biggest pirate homer pretended they were the best team in the division, but they're still a good team playing bad baseball against a really good team right now.
Cole is about a million miles away from being an ace right now, Liriano has been spotty, Niese is who is -- but the bullpen has struggled to hold leads and Cutch's slow start has been maddening. The offense has really been bettered than expected.
It's a long season, and their record is better now than it was last year.

Which ESPN personality has lambasted Christianity?
This must be in reference to the time Curt Schilling went on an extended twitter rant against evolution. ESPN writer Keith Law defended evolution w/ actual facts.
Result of ESPN fratricide on twitter -- Keith Law suspended.
ESPN fired Schilling for a pattern of inflammatory statements and not heeding suspensions and requests. Compare this to Bill Simmons who was fired much more unceremoniously after taking 2 shots at Roger Goodell, which was bad for business.
ESPN's only mantra is that the network is bigger than the personalities. When the personalities have potential to negatively affect the business, they're gone. It's been that way for about 25 years now.

quote:during their championship run, willie stargell handed out stars to players who had particularly good or important contributions. The players would add them to the caps, so you had some guys w/ a few and guys w/ a full cap full (like closer Kent Tekulve).
For those who still don't know, can someone explain?
MLB didn't seem to care at the time, and as hendersonshands has pointed out, the rule has pretty much always been that all players must wear identical, matching uniforms. In the age of marketing and brand awareness, I can see how it would get enforced must more stringently than the late 70's.
