As southern states catch up with the rest of the nation economically, socially, and educationally will football's role in our society decrease? I personally think that it will but I hope it doesn't.
A world wide economic collapse will happen within the next three years, non of this will matter.

The only thing that will kill football is the new silly nanny rules.

Back in the 50's, 60's, and even 70's, virtually every state in the South was viewed as "economically depressed," by the centers of commerce in the United States; namely, New York, Boston, Chicago, and on the West Coast, the emergence of Los Angeles.
In present day, the States that would probably not fit in that category anymore [in regards to the first 12 SEC schools] are Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and perhaps Louisiana.
Those states are the only ones with major cities, such as Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, and New Orleans (again, to a lesser degree).
Every other state with the exception of South Carolina is largely centered around agriculture. Mississippi, Alabama (though Birmingham is on the up), Arkansas & Kentucky will continue to be on the low end of the food chain, and will continue to have to boast football as their 'claim to fame' in the South.
With that said, look at Texas. That state loves football, all the way down to the High School ranks. Thanks to their relaxed tax laws and encouraging business environment, they're one of the booming states, and have been for quite some time. Even in the economic downturn, cities like Dallas & Houston were still doing very well. Despite having other great qualities, they still love football.
Football is a game, and a popular one at that. It is a sport that brings together (or apart) Doctors, Lawyers, Farmers, and Teachers on Saturdays. I think football is what keeps southern states together during the good and the bad. I doubt very highly football will ever lose its place in our society, especially in the aforementioned agricultural states.
