Yet all your pre Watson success only includes one year where you finished in the top 10 in both polls, one conference championship where you gave up 70 points in your bowl game, and one BCS win

Well..Tajh didn't play on the Kevin Steele Defense that allowed those 70 Points to be scored and Clemson (He was on offense FYI) and had not been to a BCS level Bowl since the 1981 Orange Bowl. While we are not as storied as Alabama, Tajh Boyd made it possible for Clemson to continue is move upward. His final game as Clemson Tiger was a win over THE Ohio State in one of his best games ever in the Orange Bowl and Clemsons first BCS win....Tajh Boyd holds a very special place to most Clemson fans. Wastson gets all of the love, but Boyd was a baller. If he only had a few more pieces in place......

And? Clemson has been steadily improving the last 5 years. They're getting better and better as the recruiting classes improve and Dabo builds the program.

And Auburn now has that defensive coordinator

I think Auburn wins but if Clemson wins, that could set up another great season for them
I wonder what narrative forms if Fl State gets blown out week one and then Clemson loses to AU.

An LSU hasn't finished above 3rd place in the western division since 2012 and just hired a mentally handicapped meathead who can barely speak English as their head coach.
Seems like you should be worrying about other problems than either of the main teams mentioned in this thread

Your defense wasn't great last year when you played a team with an offensive pulse. After all you gave up over 40 points to Pittsburgh

One thing I never understand about Steele and the 70 points. Clemson's O turned it over 4 times which resulted in 28 points. With the score 21-17 WVU, Clemson ran a dive play on the goaline which was stripped and WVU's D scored a 99 yard fumble return to go up 28-17. Then Taj turned the ball over on 2 consecutive drives in his own territory that WVU cashed into points. Anybody watching that game saw Clemson's O, D and Kicking game quit at that point. It was over and it wasn't the D's fault.
If you want to complain about Steele's 3rd season at Clemson I would say his pass D was horrible and it cost them big throughout the second half of the season.

I don't understand why people are predicting Clemson to score over 30 points? They only scored 19 last year when they had Watson, Williams, Gallman, and Leggett. This AU defense is nasty..I don't even know why people are talking about defense line depth. I agree that Clemson has some studs on the d-line.
At the same token Auburn has some studs as well. Marlon Davidson started as a freshman, and the only reason Derrick Brown didn't start was because he was behind Adams. Everyone seems to forget about Dontavius Russell who's been in some 1st round mock drafts. Jeff Holland also played a bunch of snaps behind Lawson. I doubt we have as good a pass rusher as Lawson, but we have a bunch of solid players.
Also returning the whole LB corps from last year, and all but one starter in the secondary. There isn't very much worry on the defensive side of the ball. I don't see many times Auburn gives up more than 30 points.

I wonder what narrative forms if/when Jarrett Stidham throws a backward pass as he faces the first real defense of his college career?

BTW, didn't Auburn beat LSU last year without scoring a touchdown? You mean Kevin Steele's defense gave up less than that?

Well the system hasn't changed lol idk if you've noticed but it's been working..
And of course, there's no comparison to Deshaun Watson.

And he kicked auburns arse. We can find another "system player" to do the same

Im not totally sure on this, but I'm almost positive that an offense is operating differently in week 1 than say maybe week 6 or around championship time lol

Tajh Boyd got to play against Auburn in 2011 and 2012. Everyone kicked their arse.
2017 Auburn can't be compared to those teams, talent or coaching wise.

Auburn won 8 games in 2011 just like last year. Prove something before you think you're gonna compete with the big teams. Auburn is let down after let down lately. This magic carpet ride auburn is expecting is a reach. Oklahoma completely dominated you. They ran it down your throats. A team clemson made look like chumps twice. Know who you are as a team and program at the moment

Schematically and personnel wise, there wasn't anything Clemson could have done to improve their play against Auburn. Meanwhile, Auburn could've played their best running back and not rotated 5 quarterbacks.
Consider Clemson lucky they survived in 2016.
