how long has it been?

traditional powers LSU, Tenn, Auburn were all down.

Ole Miss has had a nice year, but no other lower tier tier teams have stepped up.

SC and UGA just lost to their ACC in-state rivals.

So we have 2 very good/great teams, 2 good teams (UGA and Ole Miss)....and that's it.

I give LSU a lot of credit for what they've done the past decade, but how does 9 years of greatness make LSU a traditional power?

It was worse in 2004. This year it's still the 2nd-best conference.

Virtually every opinion and mathematical system has LSU as one of the top 15 programs all-time; about half of them have LSU in the top 10.

I think the mid 90's (specifically, 95 and 96)was the last time the SEC was this down. AU, UGA, and LSU were so-so and UF and Bama were the only teams worth a shite year in and year out. When UT won the MNC in '98, that year catapulted the SEC to the best conference in the country.

LSU is 12th all time in winning percentage. for comparison purposes AU is 13th, UGA is 10th, and USC is 9th. despite being down in the 90's LSU has had a very successful football program

Worse in 2004? Um no.

UGA came into the AU game 10-1. AU went 11-0 regular season. LSU was very good in 2004, lost 2 regular season games barely and 1 was to AU. And UT won the east that year with just 2 SEC losses. 3 pretty good teams in '04 and one great one.

This year, 1 great one and 1 very good one.

you must be fairly young and ignorant of the history of college football. We are a top 10-12 program in the history of college football.

right. Plus 2 good teams in Ole Miss and UGA. That's not too strong at all.

Since bear died we've won two national championships to your one. The series is 13-12-1 in bama's favor and we've won 5 SEC's to your 3. Now go frick off.

Take away the 90s and LSU has been an SEC power. You comment would be like someone saying Bama is not a power because they sucked arse from the mid-90s through 2007.

Prior to the 85 limit, there have been two SEC powers: Alabama and Tennessee

jesus, i would think of any fan base that Bama fans would have a grasp on SEC football history.

Even in the quarter century from 1950-1974, before the limit and in the pinnacle of SEC pageantry LSU was rated even or above Tennessee....and a top 10 team once again.

pre-scholly limit snapshot

Yes, Bama is a traditional power. So is LSU. So is UGA. So is Tenn. So is Auburn. With a few more years, Florida can make that claim as well......most of their points are just too closely bunch in recent history, but they are on their way.

Auburn is at the very bottom of what i would call a "traditional power" but they are there. I like to cut it off at about the top 20 of all time, and see success over several (at least 3) decades. they fit that criteria.

They have 1.5 National Championships and <10 SEC Championships in a conference in which 4 teams have more than 10.
