The official Book of Professional NBA Fandom reads thusly:
If one is so unfortunate as to hail from a state, area, or other region not represented by an Association ballclub, the fan in question is obligated to select their team based upon nearest regional affiliation. Under no circumstances is said fan permitted to claim a team outside their coterminous region due to superfluous, bandwagoning circumstances (i.e., following an individual player from one team to another outside said fan's region, or claiming a historical powerhouse located in a distant locale as related to said fan's region of influence)
