Sorry fellas, even if we have an average season this year the Gamecocks will be hanging around the top of the East for the foreseeable future.

Yall better hope UT stays down. If they come back and show recruits they can win, then that's bad news bears for the gamecocks. These things go in cycles.

Might want to check the past 4 years and next 2 years of recruiting numbers. The population shift is real.

you say that based off of 1990s perception, but times are a changin...

Not only is the population shift real and Middle TN exploding but East, TN is starting to build a few power programs as well and the schools that were already great programs are starting to be acknowledged. HS football in TN was behind the times for many reasons. We have historically produced great lineman (ask Bama or Miss or Tenn) and have been well known for that. And while we've produced superstars like Little Man Stewart it hasn't been until recently that people started realizing we produced more than linemen and that our state was an untapped resource. Fulmer in his day tapped it and went to every nook and cranny but until recently the state has been overlooked.

Now Bama, tOSU, Clemson, FSU, OM, and others look to pull recruits from our state every year - heck OM lives or dies off getting its share of Memphis recruits.

UT is the #2 program overall in the SEC

AU/LSU/UF/UGA can all fight it out for 3-6

As soon as spurrier retires South Carolina will return to their status quo...decades of mediocrity. Just nothing over there. Tennessee has the same recruiting challenges but a rich football history and much nicer state.

High school football East of the Cumberland Plateau is and will always be sub-par compared to most everywhere else in the SEC footprint.

There are lots of reasons, but here is the main one :

African American % by county

Knox : 9.1%
Hamilton : 19.9%
Sullivan : 2.3%
Blount : 2.9%
Washington : 4.3%
Bradley : 4.7%
Sevier : 1.2%
Anderson : 4.2%
Greene : 2.2%

Etc, etc, etc

HC of Vandy easily. Nashville is awesome, no expectations for greatness.

I'm a Dobyns-Bennett grad, so I know from experience.

I think we went something like 45-5 my 4 years of high school and every year ended in the Final 4 against somebody from the 'Boro, with the exception of the year it ended against Red Bank (Gerald Riggs was the #1 RB in America).

90% of the teams we played in the regular season wouldn't be able to win a single game in Metro Atlanta or Metro Birmingham. Those 10+ win DB teams would have struggled to win 3-4 games in Gwinnett County.

SC produces more talent than Tennessee. 54 NFL players are from the state of SC, the number is 35 for Tennessee. UTk fans will no doubt point out that Tennessee is a growing state. That is true, but SC is actually growing faster. SC = 3.23% annually, Tenn = 2.36% annually.

A quick look at the past 5 years shows otherwise.

more in-state talent
One of the problems for Tennessee is a lot of their instate talent seems to come from the Memphis area and that might as well be in another state as far as Tennessee is concerned. Memphis is a long way from Tennessee's campus and they seem to have difficulty pulling talent out of that area

No. Nebraska has a much bigger talent issue than UT has. Michigan too. They're old news. The pedo stuff at Penn State will pose an issue and they can't get enough speed.

Yes

UT is between 10-15 IMHO. you forgot Ohio State and Oregon and FSU.

That's not the case any more as the talent explosion is in Middle, TN with a little bit in the East. But conversely what you're talking about is why we can pull N. GA recruits so easy - location.

You serious?

Of course it's about color. 90% of East Tennessee high schools are 95-100% white. If you think that doesn't matter in terms of athletes and level of play then you aren't paying attention.

If that is your arguement, a quick look at the last 5 years shows the SCar is the better job.

I don't know the numbers, but would be interested to see how many each school has but in the NFL the last 5 years. Wins and NFL talent should hold more weight than recruiting rankings. We beat UGA last week with a 2* QB and RB.

Color has nothing to do with one's ability to play ball. Good Lord. The state has been behind because it hasn't taken HS football seriously and certainly doesn't take it as seriously as the Deep South. The Deep South has a whole bunch of black folks and is obsessional about football. That translates to a lot of black recruits - it's the result of demographics plus a passion for football plus a high level of support for HS football at all stages. However, your skin tone doesn't give you talent. There's no such thing as race in humans - we're all the same.

K, must be why 75% of SEC rosters since integration are African American.

So East Tennessee high schools didn't start taking football seriously until recently? Because I can find roughly 100% of the population who would argue otherwise.

No kidding Maybe that was the case 5 years ago. Mid-state is where almost all the top talent is now. West TN only had one top 10 player last year (Mosley) and they've only got one this year as well (Richmond).

And that's great new for VOLS.
