..would the conference realignment that we've seen still have happened?
Late 90's to early 00's had 5 legit power conferences. Now I'm not so sure if there's 3. Maybe 2 and a half

I agree to an extent that it would have helped.
But, the problem in those days, like today, is that there were/are too many teams in the top level of football. Absolutely could have kept regional alignment and strong Power conferences with 4 x 16 team regionally aligned conferences.
I have mixed opinions on that option with a relegation system added, but FBS is simply too big. Needs to be cut to improve parity in SoS.

Agree the FBS needs to consolidate. But with so many schools always attempting to gain FBS level it’s hard to fight the temptation of greed from these mid schools

I dunno about all that but I know A&M would have a national championship in 2012.
