Simple. It is a third rate conference but the Deep South teams can recruit real talent. That ACC team had their starting quarterback who is now the starter on a division-leading NFL team. The team you speak of also habitually made the bracket with very weak resumes in years where there were not 5 P5 conference champions with 0 to 1 losses.
