Those guys all started when you could only watch a few select games on TV. Some of the biggest games weren't televised due to the NCAA limiting TV contracts.
I think TV has killed those kind of guys because these guys today don't really nail down describing the whole setting and action because they know 90 percent of those listening to them are also watching it.
Before he left the boot to battle cancer, Gold's call on Bower's TD in the 2021 season CFP championship game was terrible.
Eli Gold was taken off the BAMA basketball games 2 decades ago because he couldn't describe the action in real time and at breakneck speed. He's been the human delay button all his career in calling football games. Down and distance seems to have alluded him completely.
I like distinctive voices as much as the next guy, but that is pretty much what they can say about Eli's career. And he's a nice guy and loves BAMA. But that doesn't give you down and distance.

I guess Saban ripping their hearts out one last time on his way out the door isn't sitting well. The OP is a consistent retard, but seems especially ruffled today for some reason.
I'm not the one ruffled here. Not at all.
I'm the weird one that's getting everyone upset.

I thought watching him band your dog nuts in the seccg was pretty tops.

This seems to be a constant theme with his generation. They have roles at the very top of organizations which they acquired in their 40s to early 50s while at the very peak of their performance. Yet they feel entitled to stay in those critical roles long into their 70s when their performance and adaptability has clearly waned.
Alabama offered him a dignified retirement at an appropriate time and he chose to leave stomping his feet like what his generation stereotypes as millennial behavior.
Be a mentor and leave a legacy you can pass on to a new generation of announcers who serve a new generation of fans. Is that too much to ask of someone in their 70s with plenty of money who has held this role for 35+ years? Especially in the entertainment industry where no one should take their status for granted?

So he should've quit working and not pursued other jobs.
Like I said, if he takes the Arena Football League job, everyone knows what happened. Doesn't matter that he doesn't tell anyone it wasn't his idea.

That was not the case with EG before his firing. He was beloved. Heck, when Finebaum called them out for only letting him do home games last year all of you were saying it was health related, Eli wanted it and Finebaum was stirring up trouble. Now Eli is saying that he was told to do home games only. It wasn't his idea.

So he should've quit working and not pursued other jobs.

Learfield Sports and the University of Alabama chose a new direction for broadcasting. A direction that does not include Eli Gold behind the mic.
Thank you, Eli for the many years of memories of Tide Sports. May continued good health and fortune be with you sir.

He can do anything he wants. But he is a public figure who seems to care about his legacy as part of the Alabama program during a period of 7 national titles. There was a much better way to do this where he could have stepped down and retired from the Alabama job and then pursued other opportunities. No one would care if he retired and then did some part time arena league work.
Now he will be remembered as the guy who Alabama had to fire because he wasn’t good at his job anymore and who flicked them a double bird on the way out. Goodbye legacy.

I'm not saying Eli Gold is Mike Shula or that Chris Stewart is Nick Saban
But when opportunity presents itself and there is enough justification ... You make a move, even against a legend

And that's all fine. You guys seem to be upset that he told people this very story you just told. Why? Read that post that I found on Message Board Geniuses at the start of the thread.

It's not that you made a move, it's that it upsets you that the guy you made a move against didn't like it.
"Eli, you're fired. Now, thank us for letting you work here, and tell everyone you wanted to quit."

I'm not upset. It had to happen. The job is Chris Stewart's at this point and that became very apparent recent years . I would rather let Eli go a year or so too soon and keep Chris then let Eli ride it into the sunset and lose Chris.
Eli is a legend and I hope he attends every game he can. But.. Time marches on
