SLC, the thing about Broyles meddling is that if you look at his record of accomplishments on and off the field, with hiring assistant coaches, and hiring head coaches as A.D. as well as the way he built the athletic program from pretty much the ground up to a top 25 program in terms of potential and revenue then he deserved the right to meddle a little bit. If he wants to call Jimmy Johnson, Barry switzer, Joe Gibbs , Monte Kiffen, people close to him and get their opinion on how something might work and couple those opinions with his own then he is ok to meddle a little bit. You see now that he's gone this football team looks like crap? You see the last 2 basketball hires forced on him turned out to be crap? Fans wanted to be aggressive and throw the ball downfield alot more. Arkansas does not have the talent in it's immediate recruiting base to compete in the SEC doing that like they do with a conservative running game.
So you think JFB's meddling with Hootie was good for Hootie?
That is a huge contradiction in the message you've been promoting so far, ie that Hooties is a great coach.
I think Hootie would have coached the team differently and thrown the ball down the field more if JFB had not discouraged it. JFB came from a school of thought where one of three 3 things will happen when you pass the ball and 2 of those things are bad.
I think Hootie and AR would have been better off had JFB had not forced several coaches on him.
Looking back, JFB's meddling with Jack Crowe, Danny Ford and Hootie truly was not a success. Still great at fundraising and no doubt JFB did some great things at AR, but meddling with those three coaches in particular are not success stories. JFB tried to meddle with Hatfield, Hatfield left over it.
I do agree, had John White should not have meddled with JFB. Of course, had John White not forced a committee on JFB, then we would likely have ended up with Tubbs instead of Hootie.
One poor season when a new coach is implementing a new system does not mean the end of the program. Petrino did a better job recruiting (if you follow recruiting services and put faith in them) than Hootie did his entire term at AR. To dismiss the program after one season is ridiculous and is evidence that you have little credibility on this matter.
I will also remind you another thing, AR has never been successful when relying on in-state talent. The better teams, even back to the 60s had a lot of kids from TX. To use Bert's favorite statement, AR does not have enough in-state talent to create a top tier program.
AR has to recruit out of state to be successful.
I also think the move was good for Hootie and his family too. They have a fresh start in a good place.
Again, everyone is a winner with this change.

his first recruiting class there was always some misconceptions about it. Pels first full class was #16 and since 3 of those have left where does that leave it? about #50 or so? We don't know much about it yet. Recruiting services do not go back to 99 but if you look at Nutt's first full class (not the first class upon hiring) and you consider that Nutt won the West with those as upperclassmen in 02, then it stands to reason that was probabaly just as good of a class as Petrino's. Petrino has 2 Juco's that are inflating that ranking 1 of which Leon, won't make it. The other 4 stars were not recruited by their home state schools and in DD jones, and Austin Moss case we were the closest offering. Knile Davis I can't see a tailback that's broken the same ankle twice being an impact back and wingo is a soft hitter. Nutt might have brought in a lesser recruited back like a Mike Smith but he most likely would have been a better back than Wingo. So top to bottom if you break down the meat of his class there's as many projects and risk players as any of Nutt's. Nutt's first full OM class was better than ours as most new coaches first full class is always good.
As far as Broyles meddling being good for Nutt I don't know. I think there were times he demanded an assistant coaching change for the business need of satisfying the fanbase when there was probabaly not a problem with the coach just the fact we don't have defensive players in our immediate recruiting base that our competition does.
If you want my honest opinion on offense I think Broyles philosphy on the offensive approach is the best for Arkansas against the SEC. I think if you want to be a good passing team you have to have pass blockers and more receivers which usually means a weaker running game and weaker running defense and we saw that year 1. we also saw it from 06 to 07. 07 we were a better passing team but we fumbled it alot more often. You have to pick something you want to be best at. If you want to be a passing team which Petrino is, that's fine. but understand that comes with less practice and emphasis on running (and special teams). That comes with more fumbles, more bad handoffs, more negative plays, more interceptions, more pick6's, better risk of your QB getting sacked and/or knocked out, more dropped passes, more safeties and linebackers t-ing off on receivers in the middle of the field eventually making them timid. That style comes with your Defense scrimmaging less against an effective power run in practice so when they see Nutt's or Saban's running game they will have trouble stopping it. I don't think Arkansas as a state produces enough receivers and pass blocking linemen to hold up against SEC defenses either.

all those coaches with the exception of Hatfield have something Hootie does not which is a national championship and he WILL NEVER EVER GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!
plus if you care to check it Hatfield had a something like a .800 winning percentage which is like almost 80 percent -- you want to argue that Nutt is better-- then you are an idiot. plain and simple

Bobby Petrino is the most sought out coach in college football -- ADs ask him for advise on coaches they should hire. Hootie is well hootie -- the two face jealous bioootch of a douche he is.

Hatfield had a 76% win percentage at Arkansas. Broyles had a 71% win percentage. Nutt was 61% which is 11th ranked among Arkansas Football coaches.

so if you all Ole Miss had a choice between Nutt or Petrino -- you would take the NUTT?
Posted on 5/17/09 at 10:22 pm to Crimsonpanther13
Nutt is still the more proven SEC coach.

I think Mitch probabaly deserved the ugly email Teresa sent him b/c he was a primadonna, he thought the world revolved around him, and most of all , he sucked.
If you think that email, the 2x4 email and the players' only meeting where the upperclassmen harrassed Mustain are acceptable, then you deserve having Nutt run your program into the ground. If anything like that ever happened at LSU, I would want the head coach fired immediately... mid-season if necessary.

Hawgalude maybe you missed what i put in. Nutt is a better coach than Ford and Ford was better than Hatfield at least at Clemson. Hatfield has a better record b/c he competed in a much much weaker conference where he was 2nd or 3rd in terms of recruiting potential. Nutt was always around 9th in recruiting potential in his conference.
Hatfield was fired from Clemson in 4 years. Ford coached there 13 years prior with a better winning percentage. had hatfield coached here in his prime from 98 to 07 there is no shred of evidence that suggests he would have done as good as Nutt.
one more thing, Nutt has not won a bcs b/c arkansas does not have bcs potential in the SEC. the schedule is too tough. LSU, Bama, Auburn, and whoever from teh east and whoever comes out of the East in the title game? That's a game we'll never have the talent to win. He'll win it there at Ole miss b/c it's an easier school to recruit to. The success you are seeing with him now is not even the type of the iceburg what he'll do there.

oh my gosh is this guy one of the third cousins removed from teh Murray State crew. Dude NUTT is a FRAUD
and I do not care if you make the SEC championship game every year for the next 10 years. Houston Nutt will NOT win 10 games next season even with the ITT tech teams he is playing

Nutt is not a fraud. he has won or tied for the SEC west 3 times and all 5 teams we face plus SC have deeper recruiting bases than us. the top 3 have much deeper. That is awesome and no one will have that kind of success here again.
I think Petrino is a fraud. Have you looked at how he won? he won in his last year with 6 defensive seniors that he didn't recruit plus some Juco thugs. He's the fraud.

Ok webels since you all love me anyway answer me this before I sign off for the nite. If BP is such a fraud and Nutt is so much better. Than how come the NFL wanted him to come into the league? How come he won a BCS bowl at Louisville of all places? and also explain to me why schools such as Auburn, Tennessee and LSU were interested in acquiring his services? He may have a military discipline about him but his track record speaks for itself. He has won BIG TIME within a few years of him getting into a program. That is what he will do for the razorbacks as well. He has been on our news programs told the national media that he wants to end his career at the University of Arkansas. He also knows to that he will need to build some BCS teams and put together some strong winning seasons. This Razorback fan thinks he will get the job done. Nutt promised the same thing 10 years ago and could not get it done. Time to move on for all parties involved.
Nutt will provide you all with what you want. Low expectations combined with mediocre performance and respectable bowl appearances. This is his track record.
