Coaching staff wasn't paying players... if anyone, it was boosters here and there.
At A&M, the coaches were neck-deep in the process, doling out the cash and driving up in the yard in new cars. See: Joe Avezzano.
Big difference.

I try to separate sports from real life, but that may be the only sports event that still truly pisses me off. As a fanbase we definitely still mad
And yes, I realize in the end it directly and indirectly led to many positive things. But it still makes me mad

I'll be honest. At the time it hurt. BAD. I never took a loss that hard. I cried. I actually cried tears and I'm a grown arse 30 year old man. I didn't log on to Facebook for almost 2 months to avoid having to read posts. I didn't get on Texags for a couple weeks. I didn't get on the rant.

Seems Bama and UT are both crooked but UT is less back door about it. Guess Bama will have to settle for #2 crook.

Cam you link me to an article where Jackie Sherrill was ever proven of doing anything wrong?
Posted on 5/28/13 at 6:15 pm to Big Kat
I pretty much completely shut myself off for a week or whatever until we fired Sherman. I signed up here shortly after

In addition, the NCAA placed Jackie Sherrill, the athletic director and football coach, on administrative probation for two years.

The NCAA said Sherrill lacked control over the university's assistant coaches, athletes and "representatives of its athletic interests," meaning alumni and boosters.
"The university's assistant football coaches, student athletes and representatives of its athletics' interests engaged in a variety of activities that demonstrated that these individuals had little knowledge of or regard for NCAA standards," the NCAA report said.

So Sherrill did nothing? Even when he allowed the NCAA to repeatedly search his office. They pretty much lived on our campus. Found nothing.

The SEC Office in Bumminhayum just got 1000% better with the hiring away of LSU Vice-Chancellor for Athletics and Assistant A.D. Herb Vincent to a Communications post in the SEC Office.

of course they weren't. Akers was totally clueless. But the payments never stopped.
The first infraction for the booster payments occurred over the years 1977-1981 (the 5 year rule they couldn't go further back). The infractions for that was in 1983 or so. Texas said "hey we just have some unruly boosters." I can buy that. You guys got a slap on the wrist that time (no penalty at all)
Later the NCAA came again (that's the article I posted). They didn't get around to investigating til the 5-year period was up but they found the same scheme in place for the period of 1982-1987
That's right, during the previous investigation boosters continued straight paying athletes. During. This was also 2 years after the Pony Express scandal. Yet the punishment was....

The penalties against Texas would reduce the number of football scholarships in 1988-89 from 25 to 20, and would reduce the number of recruiting visits from 95 to 75.

So Sherrill did nothing?
Exactly. His assistants were doing it all and he did absolutely nothing, hence, "lack of institutional control" for A&M and administrative probation for ol' Jackie.
ETA: Shall I say, "he did nothing about it" and turned a blind eye.

Bama may or may not have as much influence as tu, but the manner in which they exert it is vastly difference. Bama seems to be more of pulling strings behind the scenes where as tu was blatantly strong arming their way around.

I think I saw where UT gets like 60% of the big12's total revenue or something like that.
How do they get away with that? Does Texase literally run the conference in that they make all choices? Or does the others schools just accept things and vote however Texas wants on all matters?

Just to point out, the Big 12 now has equal revenue sharing, except for third-tier TV rights.
And yes, there were others who voted with Texas on previous revenue-sharing formulas... Nebraska and Texas A&M included. You know, the ones who bitched and moaned about unequal revenue while leaving.
