8 team playoff
The 5 power 5 conference champions get an auto bid.
Highest ranked group of 5 gets in.
The two highest ranked teams after that get in.

I have always been a proponent of this type of plan:

A. 6 power leagues of 12 teams, two divisions each, only these 72 teams are playoff eligible

B. 8 league games (five in division, 2 permanent opposite division, 1 rotating)

C. 2 games scheduled by the NCAA from the other power 6 conferences based on a czar's schedule - example, SECW3 vs PAC12N2 home and away, but alternate one of the matchups. That is, one of these two matchups changes this year, the other matchup would change the next year. This would add new fresh matchups every single year and changes to play in new stadiums, new fan travel, etc. Takes away much of the strength of schedule concerns and complaints.

D. Final two games are scheduled by the AD as they are now, this will allow for stadium fills and directional state matchups.

E. Relegation - the bottom team via standings/tiebreakers rotates out every two years, a new regional team rotates in. SEC - goodbye Vandy, hello Louisville (In this year it might be Tennessee!). Vandy, if you want back in, win your games and we'll see you again in two years. If you're not in the Big 12, that is. Again, new fresh opponents and a chance for the Boise States of the world to prove their worth.

F. Playoff ONLY considers teams from those 6 conferences. Playoff takes those 6 conference champions, period, plus two at large teams based on standings/rankings/computers/committee/whatever. Reseed playoff matchups each week for the best games and travel considerations.

Only 7 playoff games total and could be completed in 3 weeks, quite easily done inside the current bowl window of mid-Dec to Mid-Jan. TV revenue would go through the roof.

There’s really not 8 teams ever in the consideration of who’s the best. Even 4 is not really needed most seasons. Expanding the playoffs can only happen if the regular season is trimmed, and that’s not likely to happen for financial reasons. Just remember, each home game at Alabama, UGA, or LSU generates upwards of $20m of economic activity locally. It’s the reason these schools have been dropping Home and aways in lieu of neutral site games.
