The problem is actually the opposite. Fulmer gave him too much freedom. Pruitt being a first time HC needed a firmer hand. Instead, Fulmer was too willing to treat Pruitt like he knew what he was doing. A lot of duties that are expected of coaches (media obligations etc.), Fulmer allowed Pruitt to skip on under the pretext that he needed to do other things and was adjusting to being a HC.

Pruitt would've done better with a firmer hand. Fulmer would've done better with someone who actually did know what they were doing and could've appreciated the freedom.
